GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Utilizes an array of law enforcement networks and databases to expeditiously gather and continuously maintain evidentiary materials in criminal cases as well as to prepare materials for dissemination to defense attorneys through the discovery process; performs related duties as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Utilizes an array of law enforcement networks and databases to expeditiously gather and continuously maintain evidentiary materials in criminal cases as well as to prepare materials for dissemination to defense attorneys through the discovery process.
- Covers evidence and document collection on individual cases based upon set priority deadlines.
- Acts as primary contact for identifying, gathering and collecting information for the Office of the District Attorney, Office of the County Attorney and the Nassau County Police Department, and acts as liaison to various police departments, crime labs, and related law enforcement entities which may have relevant information for criminal cases.
- Ascertains the existence of potential discovery materials not within the prosecution's possession, custody or control.
- Reviews progress and takes appropriate actions through telephone calls, emails, and the use of messengers to ensure prompt response and receipt of requested materials.
- Bridges to the attention of District Attorney, County Attorney or department administrator matters of noncompliance requiring the possible issuance of subpoenas and matters of importance such as the existence of materials which may be exculpatory or impugn the credibility of witnesses.
- Converts physical documents to digital where applicable, imports to and exports from internal databases, maintains and organizes the material, changes file types, and subdivides large documents into smaller, more manageable ones.
- Provides defendants with all necessary discovery materials within the allowable timeframe.
- Under direct supervision, redacts private or personal information from discovery materials.
- Follows established checklists and prepares automatic discovery forms for completion by Assistant District Attorney, Deputy County Attorney, Assistant County Attorney or department administrators.
ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Knowledge of legal terminology, documents and forms.
- Knowledge of departmental databases.
- Knowledge of processes to expedite and ensure accuracy in the collection and distribution of evidentiary materials.
- Ability to evaluate and draw conclusions from information and evidence.
- Ability to work effectively under severe time constraints.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, departmental administrators, law enforcement agencies and the public.
- Ability to operate computerized evidence management systems.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret written material.
- Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university.
