Support Services - ULB Reviser
Wycliffe Associates is a ministry, and our mission of Bible translation is a special calling. We train Christians worldwide to become Bible translators and safeguard the integrity of the Scriptures. While specific skills and experience are important, what matters most is a person’s heart and calling from the Lord for ministry. In this role, you are considered a minister of the gospel, and your life and values should reflect that calling.
About the role
The ULB Reviser serves on the ULB Revision Team, responsible for editing, updating, and revising the text of the Unlocked Literal Bible (ULB) to better serve the global church in Bible translation. Team members are assigned specific functions within the revision process, including initial revision of an assigned book, independent source review of a book revised by another team member, and documentation/consistency oversight for the project. Assignments rotate by book and production cycle.
Responsibilities
- Initial revision of an assigned book
- Read the complete assigned book in the existing ULB and review evaluations from InterpreSure, alignment data, and other reported issues.
- Compare the ULB against the American Standard Version (as a historical/structural reference) and the formally approved Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek source text (the final authority for meaning and decisions).
- For each proposed change, determine:
- The problem in the current wording (accuracy, transparency, consistency, or comprehensibility).
- Whether the change belongs in the ULB text or a supporting resource (e.g., Translation Notes).
- Implications for the book or dependent resources.
- Independent review of a book revised by another team member
- Examine the complete passage against the source text and the ULB Translation Brief (not just tracked changes).
- Classify findings as critical, major, or minor based on effect on meaning, consistency, or style.
- Conduct book-level review for consistency (names, titles, key terms, discourse markers, grammatical constructions, literary structure, headings, footnotes, and formatting).
- Participate in corpus-level consistency review and user-testing of revised passages as needed.
- Documentation and consistency oversight (as assigned)
- Maintain the project's terminology database, English style guide, and corpus-level consistency reports.
- Identify patterns requiring team decisions and distinguish deliberate variation from accidental inconsistency.
- Oversee the change log and ensure downstream resource owners receive changes in a usable form.
- In every assignment
- Document substantive changes in the project's structured change log (previous wording, revised wording, category, rationale, and source-text evidence).
- Coordinate with other Revisers and refer disputed questions to the Revision Committee.
Requirements
- Minimum of a Master's degree in Biblical Languages, Old Testament, New Testament, or a related field (or equivalent training/experience). A Ph.D. is preferred.
- Demonstrated competence in Hebrew or Greek (sufficient to compare the ULB directly against the source text for an assigned Testament); proficiency in both is preferred.
- Additional training in translation studies, applied linguistics, or experience using gateway-language resources in field translation work is a plus.
- Personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ and Christ-like behavior.
- Full agreement with and adherence to Wycliffe Associates' Employee Handbook, Statement of Faith, Doctrinal Supplement, Doctrinal Standards for Resource Review, Statement on Marriage and Human Sexuality, and Ethical Standards Agreement.
