Supply Chain Tooling Engineer Intern

Base Power Company · Austin, TX · 1 mo ago
On-siteEngineeringInternship

Base is America’s next‑generation power company, rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization—electricity—by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that transform today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. The company combines engineering, operations, and creative problem‑solving to tackle interdisciplinary challenges.

About the Role

Base is building a vertically‑integrated residential energy company—hardware, software, and field operations all under one roof. As a Supply Chain Tooling & Optimization Intern, you will work directly with the teams standing up Base’s internally built Transportation Management System (TMS), Warehouse Management System (WMS), and Material Requirements Planning (MRP) platform, scaling deployments across Texas. This is not a shadowing internship; you will own real problems at the intersection of manufacturing, logistics, and software, building tools and intelligent layers that help install batteries faster and more reliably.

Responsibilities

  • Build internal tools, dashboards, and trackers that increase visibility across the supply chain.
  • Contribute to Base’s TMS, WMS, and MRP by wiring up data pipelines, integrations, and the underlying models.
  • Analyze operational data from ERP, supplier portals, and shipping systems to surface bottlenecks, blocked orders, and disruptions.
  • Prototype inventory and network optimization—including multi‑site/multi‑warehouse stock optimization, warehouse slotting, and staffing/labor planning.
  • Develop first‑pass forecasting models for material demand (to feed MRP planning parameters) and for the reliability of supplier commitments.
  • Ship solutions inside the tools planners already use, favoring the simplest method that works.
  • Partner directly with planners, buyers, and operations managers to scope small MVPs, deploy frequently, and iterate on real feedback.

Please note: Base is a startup, so priorities shift quickly. Your role may expand or change based on business needs, and the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Industrial/Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Supply Chain, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Comfort writing Python and SQL, with a genuine interest in building tools—not just analyzing data.
  • Exposure to at least one of the following: optimization/operations research, basic machine learning, or anomaly detection (coursework, projects, or prior internships).
  • Familiarity with data analysis and dashboarding; bonus for experience with pipelines, APIs, or ERP systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to translate between technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Builder mindset—enjoys ambiguity, takes ownership, and is excited to improve processes, not just measure them.
  • Experience in a tech‑enabled operations environment (energy, logistics, or manufacturing) is a plus.

About the Team

The Supply Chain team sources battery cells, assembles high‑capacity packs, and forges vendor partnerships to produce and deliver the industry’s lowest‑cost, highest‑quality home battery systems at unprecedented scale. By optimizing landed costs through strategic global sourcing, domestic manufacturing ramp‑up, and durable supplier relationships, the team directly powers Base Power’s mission of advancing human prosperity through energy abundance—delivering reliable whole‑home backup and below‑market electricity rates to tens of thousands of households. Their work fuels one of America’s fastest‑growing distributed virtual power plants, already exceeding 200 MWh deployed and aggregating flexible storage to bolster the grid against surging demands from AI, electrification, and extreme weather.

Values

  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions; principles > rules.
  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.
  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.
  • Everyone’s an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.
  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.
  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge; we work hard because we care deeply about the impact.
  • In‑Person Collaboration: Not a 9‑to‑5; we are all‑in.
  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.
