Supervisory Social Worker

This position is assigned as a Social Work Supervisor in the Primary Care - Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) program at the Chillicothe, OH VA Medical Center, reporting to the Outpatient Manager of the Mental Health service line. The incumbent coordinates and manages both administrative and clinical aspects of the PCMHI program, overseeing its day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities

• Provides daily oversight of Primary Care - Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) operations and allocates administrative and clinical resources in accordance with program needs.
• Functions with front-line decision-making authority for PCMHI staff.
• Guides the PCMHI Team in carrying out the missions of the VA, Chillicothe VAMC, and the Mental Health Integrated Clinical Community (MH ICC).
• Maintains, tracks, and analyzes caseload, consult, and program evaluation and outcome data, implementing performance improvement strategies based on analysis.
• Leads the PCMHI Team in developing, implementing, and reviewing strategic program initiatives.
• Develops, maintains, and revises program administrative plans (e.g., accessibility plan, performance improvement plan).
• Responsible for the development and implementation of program-level policies and procedures.
• Coordinates the education of internal and external referral sources about services offered by the program.
• Facilitates program adherence to The Joint Commission standards.

Requirements

• Citizenship: United States citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).
• Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
• Education: Master’s degree in social work from a school fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates from schools in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until full accreditation is achieved. A doctoral degree in social work may not substitute for the master’s degree.
• License: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level. May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision (applicable to current VHA employees).
• Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, demonstrating advanced practice skills in a specialty area or administration with progressively more professional competency and judgment. Examples include:
  • Assessing and documenting behaviors or symptoms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or intimate partner violence.
  • Using clinical social work skills.
  • Maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality per policies.
  • Acting as an advocate with community service providers and agencies.
  • Independently assessing the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their families, identifying strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and psychosocial acuity.
• Licensure Requirement: Must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and able to provide supervision for licensure.

Skills

• Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Knowledge of supervisory duties, including clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments, and quality improvement.
• Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services.
• Ability to provide staff training and development.
• Skill in interpersonal relationships when dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.

Physical Requirements

The work is primarily sedentary, with the employee sitting to perform administrative tasks. However, duties may include:

• Long periods of walking, standing, bending, crouching, reaching, and lifting moderately heavy items.
• Carrying light items such as papers, books, or small parts.
• Driving an automobile to outreach to other Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) or primary care teams at the main facility.

No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Schedule

7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
