Supervisory Recreation Specialist (Youth Services) FT – 6859

Location: Kodiak, AK • Full Time • $$62,610 - $73,045 annually (DOE) • $2,000 hiring bonus paid in installments: $1,000 upon hire, $500 at 6 months, and $500 at 12 months of service.

About the role

Serves as the Youth Center Director, ensuring a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment in Youth Programs facilities, grounds, sports fields, and security/maintenance monitoring. Manages appropriated funds (APF), non-appropriated funds (NAF), and grant funds, conducting budget and program analysis to meet patron needs. Executes opportunities for youth to engage in physical activity and positive lifestyle behaviors.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and provide year-round youth sports, recreational, social, and educational programs.
• Coordinate and schedule recurring activities, special events, and joint community undertakings to maximize facility and resource use consistent with the MWR mission.
• Lead Boys and Girls Club of America programming, including Keystone, Torch Club, and Military Youth of the Year.
• Interact professionally with employees, parents, volunteers, and local installation command personnel; resolve issues effectively.
• Supervise personnel and volunteers: assign work, direct operations, train and develop employees, evaluate performance, and recommend personnel actions.
• Manage day-to-day administration of the Youth Center program, addressing complaints, grievances, and policy implementation.
• Serve as a mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services for suspected child abuse or neglect.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including occasional TDY travel for Boys and Girls Club of America activities.
• Work nights and weekends as needed.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years old and speak, read, and write in English.
• At least 2 years’ experience working in youth programs (5th–12th grade) or teaching at the middle/high school level, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
• Demonstrated proficiency using social media platforms and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
• Must obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within 6 months of employment.
• Must pass a child protective background clearance after hire; continued employment contingent on favorable results.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience applying principles of recreation specialty areas, such as:
  • Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community or recreational programs.
  • Establishing or evaluating recreational curricula for middle/high school levels.
  • Instructing in recreational program planning and management.
  • Serving in leadership roles in local, regional, or national recreational organizations.
• Undergraduate education in general recreation or related fields (e.g., outdoor recreation, recreation and parks leadership, natural resources recreation, youth recreation, public/urban/community recreation, or physical education).
