SUPERVISORY NUCLEAR ENGINEER.

This position is a Mission Essential role ensuring organization or facility continuity of operations and completion of tasks critical to the mission.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all rules, regulations, and shipyard requirements for naval nuclear work.
  • Oversee subordinate work, monitor progress, and approve all reports before submitting them to higher-level management.
  • Perform quality control audits on nuclear technical work.
  • Provide nuclear work quality-control training to branch personnel and ensure training is delivered for various technical codes within the Nuclear Engineering Department.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Current federal employees must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level (time-in-grade requirement).
  • Appointment of retired military members within 180 days of retirement is subject to 5 U.S.C. 3326.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment (e.g., helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) continuously during work shifts.
  • Work is performed in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals). Participation in medical surveillance programs is required.
  • May require travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote or isolated sites. Must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
  • Supervisors must review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent private/public sector experience as a professional engineer ensuring shipyard compliance with Quality Control requirements for naval nuclear work associated with the repair and overhaul of naval reactor plants, as specified by NAVSEA and shipyard instructions, manuals, plans, and directives through review via audits, assessments, and performance indicators.

Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements:

  • Successful completion of a professional engineering degree from a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or
  • Inclusion of differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas: statics, dynamics; strength of materials; fluid mechanics, hydraulics; thermodynamics; electrical fields and circuits; nature and properties of materials; or any comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics; or
  • Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico; or
  • Successful passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board; or
  • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences that included the specified courses in the basic requirements; or
  • Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, geology) with at least one year of professional engineering experience under professional supervision.

Schedule

  • This position requires an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements.
  • Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • Exposure to high noise levels is required.
