This position is in the Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center - Salt Lake City, Utah, within the Salt Lake City Health Care System (VASLCHCS). The role serves as a Supervisory Environmental Care Specialist responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating environmental care and housekeeping operations that support the safe, sanitary, and efficient operation of the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical and administrative work involving managing, administering, operating, and/or supporting services and programs related to the operation and safety of Federal facilities.
  • Plans, develops, organizes, staffs, controls, directs, and evaluates a complex Environmental Management Service program.
  • Develops and implements organizational structures, operating plans, and procedures to achieve program goals; monitors effectiveness and efficiency of operations and makes adjustments as necessary.
  • Develops and implements procedures, policies, and practices that meet requirements of OSHA, The Joint Commission (JC), American Hospital Association (AHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other applicable accrediting bodies.
  • Ensures effective procedures are implemented to minimize patient, employee, or visitor exposure to infectious disease in accordance with medical center policy.
  • Develops and implements standards for cleanliness and sanitation, including frequency of cleaning, methods, procedures, safety precautions, selection and use of housekeeping supplies, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Conducts continuous inspections of the medical center to monitor housekeeping techniques, procedures, products, and adherence to infection control standards.
  • Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, difficulty of assignments, and employee capabilities; provides guidance and support in problem areas and defines objectives.
  • Demonstrates analytical ability to research, assemble, and compile information and data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/03/2026.

  • Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-11 position, you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-9 level. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 showing time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with application materials.
  • Specialized Experience (GS-11): One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-9) in the normal line of progression. Examples include:
    • Planning, coordinating, directing, evaluating, and improving environmental care and housekeeping program operations within a complex healthcare environment.
    • Overseeing environmental sanitation, laundry and linen operations, waste management, pest control, patient assistance services, bed services, Environment of Care activities, and contracted housekeeping services.
    • Monitoring program operations, identifying deficiencies, and implementing corrective actions.
    • Ensuring compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements.
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level, you must have 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a related degree or an LL.M.
  • Combination: Applicants may also qualify through a combination of specialized experience and education beyond 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education.
