Supervisory Criminal Investigator (Branch Chief, Fire Programs and Training Branch)
About the role
The Supervisory Criminal Investigator serves as a Branch Chief in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Fire Investigation & Arson Enforcement Division, Fire Programs and Training Branch. The Branch Chief provides investigative expertise and oversight for criminal investigations and organizational performance relating to law enforcement programs.
Duties
The major duties of the Supervisory Criminal Investigator (Branch Chief) position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develops and establishes policy concerning the overall program objectives, goals, resource requirements and milestones for NCETR-related Programs.
- Provides advice to and coordinates with Federal, State, local, and foreign law enforcement agencies regarding the benefits of NCETR-related programs to all law enforcement and forensic organizations.
- Assures implementation, by subordinate organizational units, of the goals and objectives for the assigned programs.
- Directing the accomplishment of work through investigative, instructional, technical, and administrative staff.
- Exercises delegated managerial authority to set a series of annual or multiyear long-range work plans and schedules for investigative or administrative work.
Requirements
- Must be U.S. Citizen or National.
- Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st, 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.
- May be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
- You must be a current permanent ATF employee with competitive status or a CTAP/RPL eligible candidate.
- Pass drug screening and subject to random drug test.
- Suitable for Federal employment determined by background investigation.

Qualifications
To qualify for the Supervisory Criminal Investigator (Branch Chief) position at the GS-14 grade level, candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13) by the closing date of this announcement. Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume. Specialized Experience must include all of the following:
- Leading and providing accurate information and guidance regarding investigative procedures (i.e., arrest and processing, arrest principles, handling of dangerous evidence); AND
- Conducting surveys, studies, and analyses to identify problems and provide solutions to highly complex and sensitive issues; AND
- Interpreting and applying ATF's statutory responsibilities and related information of Federal, State, and local jurisdictions, as well as regulated firearms and explosives industries; AND
- Preparing reports of progress, findings, recommendations, and impacts of task force groups.
