About the role

The Chief of Protective Services (CPS) is responsible for the overall administration, planning, design, organization, services, direction, operation, review, and analysis of security and law enforcement, fire services, and emergency management for the Center. This role supervises a team of specialists covering all core functions of protective services.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, manages, and continually analyzes complex NASA protective services core functions that have national significance and impact.
  • Coordinates mission-critical planning and evaluations with the organization’s management.
  • Conducts comprehensive studies and detailed analyses to determine the effectiveness of all security, fire services, and emergency management functions.
  • Oversees and directs programs designed to prevent and respond to terrorist acts, workplace violence, and other threats.
  • Assesses threats and leads in the formulation and execution of comprehensive plans to prevent or mitigate vulnerabilities or failures.
  • Participates on Agency-wide committees, task forces, or working groups formulating guidance for the implementation of emerging policy.

Requirements

  • May require a one-year probationary period.
  • Position subject to pre-employment background investigation or higher-level clearance, which may vary based on duty location or NASA Center requirements.
  • Financial Disclosure, Drug Testing, and/or Travel Requirements may differ and be required based on duty location or NASA Center requirements.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is required to qualify for this position. To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level, including:

  • Providing oversight or guidance for the day-to-day operations of protective services for an organization in the areas of security, law enforcement, and emergency management.
  • Implementing and managing programs designed to prevent unauthorized disclosure, misuse, theft, assault, espionage, sabotage, or loss of information, personnel, property, facilities, or operations.
  • Developing security policy guidance to ensure organizational requirements are achieved.

  • Additional selections may be made for similar positions across NASA within the local commuting area(s) of the location(s) identified in this announcement.
  • If you have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP), you must indicate your eligibility and meet the minimum qualifications requirements. Proof of eligibility is required.
  • Applicants who received a Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP) from the federal government within the last five years may be required to repay the full amount prior to establishing a start date.
  • This position is not part of a bargaining unit.
  • You may be required to serve a one-year probationary period, during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
