Supervisor, Sterile Processing - Central Sterile, Full Time, Nights

About the Role

Under the direction and supervision of Sterile Processing management, the Supervisor oversees the sterile processing area and all related systems, coordinating the reprocessing of surgical instrumentation used throughout the healthcare facility. This includes decontamination, disinfection, washing, preparation and packaging, terminal sterilization, and preparation of the surgical case cart system. The Supervisor acts as a liaison for the Operating Room (OR) and all external entities.

Responsibilities

• Develops, supervises, and evaluates department staff in conjunction with management; actively participates in the recruitment process.
• Prepares departmental team shift reports and records, including use of electronic instrument tracking systems.
• Assists the Manager in developing and implementing written policies/procedures and ensures adherence.
• Assists the Manager in maintaining operational costs at the set budget level.
• Provides management with instrumentation/capital requests and department-specific needs.
• Coordinates the processing and reassembly of instrumentation with user departments.
• Ensures all high-level disinfection processes are accurately completed and documented.
• Oversees weekly audits of specified trays and sends biweekly audits to an independent lab to verify sterilization parameters.
• Monitors loaner tray processing for surgical cases and coordinates with vendors.
• Reviews the OR schedule daily and throughout the shift; partners with OR Coordinators and Sterile Processing management to address discrepancies regarding scheduled cases, instrumentation needs, or delays.
• Maintains quality control systems related to infection control, sterilizer monitoring, packaging, and processing in accordance with institutional, departmental, and regulatory agency requirements.
• Maintains the department schedule in partnership with management to ensure 24/7/365 coverage and ensures staffing aligns with volume.
• Recommends cost-reduction opportunities and participates in continuing education programs and seminars.
• Monitors staff execution of standard work, holding staff accountable for work quantity, quality, and adherence to safety standards.
• Provides feedback to management for annual performance evaluations and addresses areas of concern, ongoing orientation needs, or individual learning plans.
• Initiates coaching and positive disciplinary actions as necessary in partnership with the Manager.
• Maintains awareness of standards and standard changes within the healthcare system and industry.
• Promotes a high level of staff engagement, performance, and retention in partnership with management.
• Performs other related functions as directed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) by IAHCSMM or Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) by CBSPD required at hire.
• A minimum of one year of supervisory experience preferred, preferably in Sterile Processing.
• A minimum of five years of experience in the sterile reprocessing environment is preferred.
• Thorough knowledge and experience with asepsis, surgical techniques, instruments, disinfection, decontamination, and all related functions within SPD, including current AAMI standards, are required.
• Functional knowledge of sterilization regulatory guidelines is required.
• Current knowledge and experience with instrument tracking programs are required.
• Strong communication, critical thinking, and team-building skills are required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 35 lbs.
• Ability to push and pull up to 20 lbs.
• Auditory and visual skills, including color determination.

Mental Requirements: Possesses critical thinking and analytical skills. Ability to multi-task, communicate effectively, and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team. Capacity to cope with difficult situations and tolerate irregular hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Environmental Requirements and Exposure Hazards: Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals. Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Pay

Pay Range: $28.03 - $39.24 per hour.
