Supervisor, Social Worker (DOH/PHD/FHB #11197)

Salary: $33.12 - $49.68 hourly / $68,886 - $103,330 annually. This position is classified as Pay Band C9.

About the role

The Family Health Bureau works to improve the health of women, children, and families in New Mexico through policy, surveillance, assurance, and direct services provided to reproductive-age women, infants, children, adolescents, and their families, including children and youth with special healthcare needs. The bureau brings federal funds to New Mexico and provides guidance and oversight of program services delivered in regional health offices.

This position supports the Children's Medical Services (CMS) program by coordinating and organizing pediatric medical specialty clinics held annually in local public health offices to improve access to pediatric care. Responsibilities include managing logistics for providers and public health staff, ensuring fiscal solvency through case management and clinic billing, auditing monthly billing sheets, and entering client claims into insurance billing portals. The role requires expertise in medical terminology, billing codes, claims submission, denials, and adjudication.

Responsibilities

• Provide licensed medical social work services and medical care coordination to a caseload of children and youth with chronic medical conditions and their families (40%).
• Supervise two staff MSW social workers covering a six-county area in northeast New Mexico (20%).
• Conduct outreach to medical practices, hospitals, and community agencies to build partnerships and expand the caseload in the six-county area (20%).
• Oversee training activities for CMS users on the program's integrated database (5%).
• Troubleshoot provider billing errors and assist CMS staff and medical providers in resolving patient care issues (5%).
• Serve as a liaison between CMS, Medicaid, and the database contractor; manage reports to support patient care and service delivery (5%).
• Manage the enrollment of eligible clients onto the high-risk medical pool (5%).

Customers

Clients of Children’s Medical Services, internal and external partners of the Family Health Bureau and Department of Health, clinical field office staff, contractors, and state office staff.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Social Work.
• Current license to practice as an LMSW or LCSW in New Mexico (per NMAC 61-31-9).
• More than five years of experience as a licensed social worker in settings such as social service agencies, healthcare, medical, educational, mental health, home health, hospice, developmental disabilities, or other relevant fields.
• Five years of social work supervisory experience related to the essential duties of this role.
• Considerable knowledge of social work principles and practices, with experience partnering across multiple agencies.
• Familiarity or experience working in a medical environment.
• Experience working with children/youth with special healthcare needs preferred.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with a diverse client population (e.g., age, sex, race, mental/physical capabilities, religion, ethnicity, and culture).
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (per NMAC 61-31-9) and three years of experience in a social work setting (e.g., social service agencies, healthcare, medical, educational, mental health, home health, hospice, developmental disabilities, or other relevant experience working with patients, clients, providers, and families).
• Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience totaling seven years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must possess or obtain a current Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

• Office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminals (VDT) and extensive use of personal computers and cellular telephones.
• Extended periods of sitting.
• Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
• Weekly travel to nearby counties (e.g., Española, Rio Arriba).
