About the role

The Production Supervisor is primarily responsible for overseeing and leading a team of direct labor associates in the manufacture and assembly of products, components, and parts for custom fire and rescue vehicles. The Supervisor is accountable for meeting production schedules, cost targets, and quality standards. This position emphasizes highly skilled processes, complex assemblies, and testing. The Supervisor must possess a high level of technical skill to assist operators in troubleshooting and problem resolution, and lead the team in safety, quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Daily assignments of hourly production personnel to meet schedule commitments and cycle time requirements.
  • Prioritizes and manages customer workflow within the department to ensure timely and efficient task completion in accordance with the customer schedule.
  • Accountability for ensuring all quality, regulatory, and ISO requirements are met, including stopping production if appropriate.
  • Reviews all work within the department to assure technical accuracy meets customer requirements, engineering design expectations, shop orders, engineering prints, bill of material, work instructions, and quality documentation.
  • Assures all workmanship standards are met.
  • Responsible for safety and environmental compliance of the department; holds employees accountable for following all OSHA and company policies and regulations.
  • Actively participates in safety improvement activities.
  • Maintains accurate and timely attendance records of employees in the department.
  • Ensures departmental compliance and enforcement of all company policies and procedures.
  • Ensures consistent and effective employee relations; recommends rewards/recognition and initiates necessary disciplinary actions.
  • Provides technical expertise for problem resolution; liaises with Materials, Engineering, Sales Administration, and Product Management to determine root cause and corrective actions.
  • Provides input and recommendations on staffing requirements and selection of departmental personnel.
  • May assist in developing area budget goals for personnel, equipment, and supplies.
  • Responsible for the training and development of all departmental personnel, including defining job function requirements, training plans, and maintaining the department qualification and training skill matrix.
  • Evaluates employees in terms of skill set and other department/company requirements.
  • Actively leads continuous improvement activities within the departments, including Lean foundational blocks (Identification of Waste, 5S, Standard Work, and Visual Management).
  • Participates in Kaizen Events and value stream map creation; acts as a subject matter expert where appropriate.
  • Performs or assists with any operations, as required or directed, to maintain workflow or respond to production requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of work-related experience, with 2 years in a Supervisory or Leadership capacity.
  • Practical experience including electrical, mechanical, welding, metal fabrication, etc.
  • Experience in vehicle production or custom manufacturing environment.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with manufacturing processes.
  • Thorough understanding and application of lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with demonstrated team building and conflict resolution ability.
  • Excellent employee and human relations skills.
  • Excellent computer skills; ability to learn and use company-specific systems.
  • Knowledge, training, and experience with regulatory agency requirements such as NFPA, FAA, OSHA, Annual RCRA, and triennial DOT requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift/Push/Pull: Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching/Crawling/Reaching: Bending the body downward and forward; moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet; extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or between work sites.
  • Visual Acuity: Required for operating machines (e.g., lathes, drill presses, power saws, mills) and performing mechanical tasks of a non-repetitive nature (e.g., carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics).
  • Operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Subject to hazards: Includes proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or chemicals.
