Job Summary
Responsible for the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of utility systems, which includes but isn't limited to, steam, water, electricity, compressed air, and natural gas—while leading a team, and ensuring regulatory compliance, and overseeing department maintenance.
Essential Job Functions
- Supervises routine industrial steam, water, chilled water and condensate systems analysis and chemical treatment of industrial water systems.
- Analyzes operational data and reconfigures operating units as necessary to provide adequate, economical service.
- Utility system troubleshooting and equipment failure response.
- Utility system troubleshooting and equipment failure response.
- Utility performance analysis and energy efficiency improvement.
- Cost reduction initiatives.
- Capital project and commissioning support.
- Operational, maintenance, and regulatory documentation management.
- Budget and utility cost management support.
- Emergency response and on-call support.
- Continuous improvement initiatives.
- Investigates abnormal operating events or equipment failures to determine cause; makes adjustments, repairs, and/or modifications as needed.
- Monitor process equipment, process temperatures, pressures, levels, flows; Track and create reports for electrical, water, steam and air consumption.
- Prioritize, plan, organize and execute projects during maintenance shutdowns and startups.
- Identify and correct any potential problems (troubleshooting) and take appropriate action necessary to prevent serious equipment failure.
- Acts as a liaison between contractors, partner companies, utility companies, and the county/city.
- Creates and updates standard operating procedures.
- Uses a computer to create, compose, and edit technical and/or administrative correspondence, reports, operating procedures and documentation.
- Environmental, Health & Safety compliance management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience of plant utilities, which includes chillers, cooling towers, compressors, and water treatment systems.
- Extensive knowledge of steam, process water, utility wastewater, DIW, cooling water, electricity, compressed air, and natural gas.
- Understanding of OSHA and process safety requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and engineering drawings.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Knowledge of energy conservation and sustainability practices.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Thorough understanding of the work order system, investment budgets, expenses, inventory, assets, warehouse management, and document control.
- Leadership and personnel management skills.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm, however business needs may require additional hours worked, which includes nights, weekends and holidays when required.
- Ability to be on-call.
- Ability to distinguish color-coded piping and system indicators.
- This position supervises the work of others.
- This position works primarily in a manufacturing environment, which includes exposures to moving parts, high noise levels, vibrations, varying atmospheric conditions, hot and cold temperatures, chemicals, high pressure steam and dust.
- Some travel may be expected for this position.
- Ability to remain in a stationary position up to 85% of shift, lift up to 50 pounds as necessary, work in confined spaces, climb stairs and ladders, And walk extended distances regularly.
- Must be able to wear full-face respirator and protective equipment for testing.
- This includes minimal facial hair in order to ensure proper fit in of respirator in accordance with OSHA regulations.
- Must complete annual medical monitoring program, including pulmonary function testing.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree & 3 years of directly related work experience OR
- Associate’s Degree & 6 years of directly related work experience OR
- High School Diploma/GED & 8 years of directly related experience.
