Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment)

About the role

The Distribution Engineering Unit in the Bureau of Water & Sewer Operations is seeking to hire a Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment). Reporting to the Trunk Main Manager in Distribution Operations, the selected candidate will supervise Machinists, Machinist’s Helpers, and Laborers in the inspection, maintenance, overhaul, and repair of water supply equipment including regulators, valves, meters, gauges, gears, and other operating infrastructure located in chambers throughout the five boroughs.

The candidate will prepare and track job orders, work schedules, assignments, and parts inventories; must be familiar with hand tools as well as machine shop equipment maintenance and operations; and perform and supervise work in both permit and non-permit required confined spaces. The role also includes ensuring the unit’s adherence to all Department EH&S policies and operating a motor vehicle and other power equipment as necessary.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Machinists, Machinist’s Helpers, and Laborers in the inspection, maintenance, overhaul, and repair of water supply equipment (regulators, valves, meters, gauges, gears, and other infrastructure).
• Prepare and track job orders, work schedules, assignments, and parts inventories.
• Perform and supervise work in permit and non-permit required confined spaces.
• Ensure adherence to Department EH&S (Environmental Health & Safety) policies.
• Operate a motor vehicle and other power equipment as necessary.

Requirements

• Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto Mechanic, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile), or Machinist, with at least two years at a supervisory level.
• Alternatively, at least five years of the above experience plus sufficient relevant training from an approved trade, technical, or vocational high school, or relevant college education to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school; one year of experience for each 30 semester credits in college. All candidates must still have two years of supervisory experience.
• Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License (must be maintained for the duration of employment).
• For certain positions, a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with no restrictions may be required (must be maintained for the duration of employment).

Pay

$127,943.00 – $140,840.00 per year.

• New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. Certain City employees may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County after two continuous years of service.
