Supervisor - Microbiology

About the role

This role is responsible for the operational, technical, and personnel management of an assigned laboratory section. The position ensures smooth day-to-day workflow, resolves operational issues, and escalates concerns to the Lab Manager or Physician Supervisor when appropriate. It maintains a patient- and client-focused environment that meets all accrediting and regulatory standards. The role oversees the training, competency, and performance of section staff and performs technical duties as needed. It promotes and enforces all company and laboratory policies, ensuring consistent compliance and high-quality service. Strict confidentiality regarding patient and personnel information is required, along with a high level of professional excellence, including sound independent judgment, reliability, initiative, flexibility, and strong ethical standards.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates daily operations of the laboratory section.
• Supervises, trains, and develops department staff.
• Oversees performance improvement and quality control programs.
• Ensures fiscal responsibility.
• Participates in PALM and department projects.
• Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory agency requirements and ensures compliance.
• Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and personnel information.
• Performs technical duties as needed.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology, medical laboratory science, or clinical laboratory science (required).
• Bachelor's degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical/biological science (preferred).
• 4 years of training and experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty under a qualified Medical Director.
• Experience working in a controlled environment, following safety measures to minimize exposure to chemicals, body fluids, and bloodborne pathogens.
• Current state license in the state of practice (if applicable).
• ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist generalist, Medical Laboratory Technician, or Medical Technologist generalist.
• Incumbents certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004, must successfully complete the ASCP's Certification Maintenance Program.

Physical and Environmental Demands

• Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds frequently, and 10 to 20 pounds constantly.
• Must be able to stoop, bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands; maintain manual dexterity.
• Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
• Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.
• Must be able to work a flexible work schedule (e.g., more than 8 hours a day, weekends).
• Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue, but incumbents may be called upon to assist in emergency care or first aid.
• Potential occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the healthcare environment.
