About the role
The Supervisor, High Voltage Engineering is responsible for providing technical leadership and supervisory oversight for high-voltage engineering activities supporting utility-scale renewable energy, substation, transmission, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects. This role oversees engineering management & review, construction support, commissioning coordination, and operational readiness activities related to high-voltage systems and infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and support internal & subcontracted engineers and technical staff responsible for high-voltage system design, engineering reviews, construction support, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
- Perform and oversee quality assurance reviews of high-voltage engineering deliverables, including one line/three line diagrams, relay protection schemes, electrical studies, cable and equipment specifications, interconnection documentation, and construction packages to ensure compliance with project requirements, utility standards, and applicable codes.
- Lead technical coordination and problem resolution efforts related to substations, medium- and high-voltage collection systems, transmission interconnections, protection and controls, SCADA integration, and energization activities.
- Support development and implementation of engineering standards, design best practices, and value engineering initiatives to improve system reliability, constructability, operational performance, and cost efficiency.
- Provide technical input and oversight for project estimating, procurement activities, bid evaluations, vendor selection, and contractor scope and schedule reviews related to high-voltage equipment and systems.
- Review and support development of construction and commissioning documentation, including equipment submittals, switching procedures, test plans, outage coordination requirements, commissioning checklists, and turnover packages.
- Collaborate with project management, purchasing, construction, operations, utilities, engineers of record (EOR), contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to ensure successful project execution and system integration.
- Support resolution of complex technical and field-related issues, including design changes, commissioning deficiencies, equipment performance concerns, outage coordination, schedule impacts, and construction conflicts.
- Ensure high-voltage engineering activities and project documentation comply with applicable federal, state, local, utility, OSHA, NESC, IEEE, and other applicable industry codes, standards, and safety requirements.
- Promote and reinforce a strong safety culture through active participation in safe work planning, hazard identification, electrical safety compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Mentor, train, and support the professional development of engineers and technical personnel to strengthen organizational technical capabilities and leadership development.
- Maintain awareness of evolving industry technologies, utility requirements, engineering standards, and renewable energy market trends through continuing education and professional development activities.
Requirements
- Knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems, including substations, transmission, collection systems, protection and controls, and utility interconnections.
- Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including OSHA, NESC, NEC, IEEE, and utility requirements.
- Ability to supervise, mentor, and support the development of engineering and technical personnel.
- Skill in coordinating cross-functional engineering, buy-out, construction, commissioning, and operational activities across multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve complex technical, construction, and operational issues in high-voltage environments.
- Knowledge of renewable energy infrastructure, including utility-scale solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
- Experience supporting utility-scale renewable energy, substation, transmission, distribution, or battery energy storage (BESS) projects.
- 5+ years of experience leading substation & transmission line projects, including technical teams, contractors, & engineering personnel.
- Demonstrated time management, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with project teams, subcontractors, clients, and regulatory authorities.
