About the role

Leads a team to ensure the objectives of the Wheel End Laboratory are met and work processes are continuously improved. This position performs a full range of technical work including FMEAs, DVPs, writing new test procedures, sign-off test reports, drafting laboratory management policies and procedures, test report templates, measurement uncertainty budgets, and inter-laboratory correlation studies. The role also runs laboratory empirical investigations resolving component-level root-cause analysis and provides developmental opportunities for those aspiring to move into an Engineering Manager position.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily test activity and performance of direct reports, including coaching, identifying business goals, growing individual skills, completing performance reviews, and making hiring/disciplinary decisions.
  • Lead test planning activities with product engineering for disc brake, drum brake, slack adjuster, and actuator product lines.
  • Manage test resources, equipment calibration, efficiency, and utilization.
  • Develop metrics to drive improved productivity and quality.
  • Provide technical direction and support to technicians performing tests.
  • Promote and support a team focus toward meeting the needs of internal and external customers.
  • Plan, conduct, and coordinate complex engineering technical assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of foundation brake hardware and laboratory testing techniques.
  • Responsible for DVP&R execution in accordance with laboratory policy and program timing, providing point of contact for laboratory test request status.
  • Approve all test reports described on a DVP&R, accountable for evaluation of technical information and interpretation of test results.
  • Analyze test data and write test reports to clearly document test results and conclusions.
  • Serve as a foundation brake hardware technical expert in laboratory test methods.
  • Support other Bendix departments requiring test support.
  • Introduce new tools related to testing and data processing.
  • Responsible for 5S + 1 audits, SCARs, and PARs.
  • Interface with and give presentations to internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering (required).
  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering (preferred).
  • 8+ years of experience with foundation brake hardware testing and leadership in the automotive or commercial vehicle industry.
  • Knowledge of ISO17025 (strongly preferred).
  • Capability to lead technical activities and guide by example.
  • Experience with laboratory process improvements (strongly preferred).
  • 8D process experience and demonstrated implementation of PCA solutions (highly regarded).
  • Six Sigma experience (strongly preferred).
  • Project coordination experience (strongly preferred).

Skills & Knowledge

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills in a team environment (e.g., DFSS, 8D, RCA, DFMEA, and DVP&R processes).
  • Proficiency with MS Project and Gantt Chart resource leveling.
  • Ability to write test procedures, test templates, and test plans.
  • Experience supporting standard development with legal institutes (e.g., SAE, ISO).
  • Knowledge of air brake systems (e.g., Air Disc Brakes, S-cam Brakes, Drum Brakes, Actuators, Air Chambers, Slack Adjusters).
  • Experience running brake tests on inertia dynamometers.
  • Experience with calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Statistical capability and skilled in DOE (Design of Experiments) techniques.
  • Knowledge of reliability methods and process improvements.
  • Understanding of Critical Characteristics (C/C), Special Characteristics (S/C), and Pass-Thru Characteristics (P/C).
  • Metrology, data acquisition and control, test equipment and instrumentation, test standards, and procedures as applied to wheel-end brake products.
  • Document control with Teamcenter Unified Architecture or similar systems for engineering drawings, specifications, test procedures, and test reports.
  • Effective communication of complex testing principles to diverse audiences, including customers and suppliers.
  • Detail-oriented with a drive to complete test requests on time per priority.
  • Strong root cause analysis (RCA) and test report writing skills.
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong understanding of bench test tools/equipment such as inertia dynamometers, vibration, fatigue, instrumentation, and strain gauge measurements.
  • Self-organized, goal-oriented, and team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Customer focus (internal and external).
  • Proficiency with the following tools: Test Request System, MS Project, Minitab, Reliability Tools, Data Acquisition Systems, Automated Test Software, Advanced Office Package, Advanced Excel, LabVIEW, Diadem, IMC, or HBM.

Pay

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Bowling Green is $89,900 to $158,200 per year. The final pay offered will depend on factors such as experience, industry background, and education.
