Supervisor, Custodial Services (3rd shift - part time)

About the role
Responsible for supervising custodial staff to ensure University buildings and assets are clean and well maintained. Ensures high-quality fulfillment of cleaning tasks by providing proper equipment, training staff in appropriate methods, and coordinating complementary tasks as needed for the overall custodial program.
Performs a variety of administrative functions in support of the Custodial Division’s goals, including:
- Submission of payroll data
- Maintenance of key control system
- Maintenance of attendance records
- Management of work orders
- Administration of the safety program for assigned staff
- Administration of the collective bargaining agreement between the University and USAW RI FM
Conducts visual inspections of all locations under their responsibility, acts as the first responder to maintenance issues, and takes action to resolve them. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Schedule
This is a weekend, part-time supervisor position. Successful candidates must be available to work overtime and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Friday & Saturday: 11:00pm–8:00am (overnight/3rd shift)
- Scheduled weekly hours: 20
Requirements
- Associate’s degree and 2–4 years of custodial/janitorial/maintenance experience or equivalent
- 2 years of experience supervising employees, preferably in a union environment
- Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, equipment, tools, and materials common to the custodial/janitorial profession
- Knowledge of floor care procedures and equipment
- Knowledge of general industry safety practices and standards within the custodial profession
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of supervision of bargaining unit employees
- Excellent customer-oriented service skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Careful but assertive approach to personnel matters and conflict resolution
- Ability to work in a collaborative, diverse environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including time & attendance and work order scheduling
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize large amounts of information and plan appropriate responses
- Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate the work of others with fair and well-documented narratives
- Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

- General knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and structural trades

Physical demands and working conditions
- Regularly required to talk and hear
- Must stand, walk, use hands to feel, and reach with hands and arms
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment, including steel-toed shoes, non-slip shoes, eye protection, nitrile, and leather gloves
- Must be able to walk, stand, and climb stairs for long durations during and outside of shifts
- Must be able to work under adverse temperatures and/or weather conditions
- Must meet the requirements of the Animal Care Facility Program, including completion of an Occupational Health and Wellness Survey and medical monitoring
- Position is classified as on-site
- Incumbents are required to work evenings, weekends, and holiday rotations
