About the role

To supervise all clerical personnel in the Central Processing Department. To train all lab personnel in the use of the LIS.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises all clerical personnel in the Central Processing Department
  • Trains all lab personnel in the use of the LIS
  • Delegates the following duties to staff and performs them when necessary:
    • Intakes, time stamps, and accessions all specimens
    • Centrifuges specimens
    • Appropriately distributes specimens to the different laboratory sections
    • Packages and sends specimens to appropriate test site
    • Reviews all overdue specimens
    • Collections and sorts all reports in preparation for pick-up by messenger
    • Answers phone queries about laboratory results
    • Discards outdated specimens following laboratory guidelines
    • Affords assistance in the preparation and update of procedure manuals
    • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies
    • Maintains all Quality Assurance reviews
    • Reviews daily entries into the LIS and takes appropriate steps
    • Maintains continued compliance with policies, procedures, and record keeping necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies
    • Performs all duties of laboratory clerks as required
    • Works weekends, holidays, and other shifts when required
    • Maintains daily, weekly, monthly, and other maintenance on laboratory equipment as required
    • Washes and cleans sinks, body trays, bench tops, cabinets, and other equipment
    • Affords assistance in maintaining the supply room
    • Accepts laboratory materials from Receiving or other vendors
    • Transports specimens and reports between laboratories and clinics
    • Coordinates chemical supplies between the Grossing, Frozen section, histology/Autopsy room
    • Prepares tissue fixture solutions and maintains an updated inventory of special solutions
    • On a weekly basis, discards specimens and organs, submitting a listing of same for department records
    • Disposes of anatomical specimens in compliance with government codes and regulations
    • Prepares gross surgical specimens, including numbering cassettes describing same
    • Receive, scans and prepares slide trays for pathologist review. File slides after Pathologist review
    • Remains familiar with and enforces all safety regulations and practices
    • Mets criteria for competency assessment in all areas
    • Performs general housekeeping duties as assigned to maintain a safe and sanitary environment
    • Maintains a clean and orderly work area
    • Performs work assignment within expected standard of performance
    • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required
  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred
  • 2 - 5 years related experience (clinical laboratory setting)
  • Computer experience required
  • Supervisory experience preferred
