About the role

Natividad is seeking a full-time Supervising Nurse I in the Enhanced Care Management department. Supervising Nurses perform first-level nursing and administrative supervisory functions, enforcing hospital and nursing policies and applying recognized nursing practices to supervise and provide professional care to inpatients. The County of Monterey awards veterans’ preference points for this recruitment.

Responsibilities

  • Assign employees daily to perform nursing tasks based on available skills and patient needs; set priorities and redirect employees as needed
  • Oversee nursing personnel and instruct them in technical care, including administration of drugs and operation of intravenous, mechanical breathing apparatus, and other equipment
  • Verify that all nursing tasks, medical or psychiatric treatments, and physicians’ orders have been performed and charted
  • Review and formally evaluate employee performance; write anecdotal notes and counsel employees; interpret personnel and administrative policies
  • Interpret nursing philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures to employees, patients, and visitors
  • Serve as the unit liaison and resource nurse-in-charge
  • Assess patients’ physical, emotional, social, and economic circumstances; conduct nursing rounds and determine if planned care has been provided; make referrals to other services for patient well-being; plan and conduct patient-centered staff conferences
  • Investigate and answer queries from physicians, patients, and visitors about patient care
  • Maintain safety and control of patients, employees, and visitors in the unit
  • Investigate and prepare reports on accidents and incidents involving patients, employees, and visitors
  • Instruct or assign new employees for in-service instruction and orientation
  • May order the transfer of a patient needing specialized care from one facility to another

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing or the ability to obtain prior to start (name on license must match application)
  • Minimum of two years’ nursing experience as an acute care registered nurse in a relevant area (e.g., Mental Health Unit)
  • At least one year of leadership or charge experience
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a registered nurse

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of nursing team roles and responsibilities, nursing techniques, and unit-specific procedures
  • Understanding of Enhanced Care Management guidelines, Medi-Cal/CalAIM rules, and Managed Health Plan (MHP) requirements
  • Knowledge of social determinants of health and local community resources addressing housing, mental health, and substance use disorders
  • Ability to supervise Staff Nurse I, Staff Nurse II, Community Healthcare Worker, and Psychiatric Social Worker
  • Competency in all patient care skills specific to the unit
  • Ability to interact effectively with physicians, nursing staff, ancillary staff, patients, and the public to resolve issues and promote care delivery

Conditions of Employment

  • Pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment
  • Undergo a Department of Justice fingerprint check and background/reference verification
  • Possess a valid Driver License for the class of vehicle driven or provide approved transportation (if driving on County business)
  • Present original Social Security Card and valid Driver License or State ID prior to the first day of work
  • Ability to work all shifts, including irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to work with potentially hazardous and infectious substances
