Supervising Janitor (Grade 11) Overnight Shift - NY HELPS

Location: Farmingdale, NY | Full-time | Overnight shift: Monday through Friday, 11:00pm to 7:30am

About the role

The Custodial department at Farmingdale State College seeks a Supervising Janitor to oversee the overnight shift. This position is part of the New York State Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). There is no examination required for appointment; a non-competitive appointment will be made, with the possibility of conversion to competitive status within one year.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and administers a program of systematic cleaning and care of assigned building areas or the entire program in accordance with established guidelines.
• Plans and schedules staff assignments and cleaning services; reassigns staff to ensure work is accomplished according to schedule and fully utilized; shifts personnel to handle emergency cleaning, maintenance, and care projects.
• Inspects buildings and assigned areas for compliance with cleaning guidelines; investigates complaints of unsatisfactory service performance and takes corrective action.
• Informs staff of custodial and related policies, procedures, and directives, including safety requirements, in meetings and memoranda.
• Evaluates and makes recommendations for equipment, changes in cleaning methods, and work performance standards to ensure a more effective and efficient cleaning program.
• Prepares a portion or the entirety of annual equipment, supplies, and personnel budget requests for the custodial operation.
• Supervises the custodial program inventory system, including requisitioning and proper distribution and control of new cleaning equipment and supplies.
• Prepares or reviews for accuracy periodic reports, such as work activity, cost reports, and staff utilization and requirements, and advises management on custodial operations.
• Performs the full range of supervisory duties, including interviewing and selecting staff; establishing training standards for new employees; resolving personnel issues; evaluating work performance; taking appropriate counseling, coaching, or disciplinary action; approving timecards and leave requests; and recommending retention or termination of employees.
• Provides oral and written instructions to staff for requested special cleaning services that vary from routine operations.
• Supervises unskilled maintenance and repairs to buildings and equipment, and requests semi-skilled or skilled trades staff as necessary.
• Supervises the arrangement of premises for public meetings, classes, graduations, and special events by directing the movement and placement of seating and other equipment as specified by the event coordinator.

Requirements

• Two years of satisfactory full-time experience in the custodial care or cleaning of buildings, offices, or institutional residences, of which one year must have been at a supervisory level.

Pay

Grade 11 | Salary: $47,695 + $4,000 location pay = $51,695 total annual compensation.
