Supervising Director

About the role

The Supervising Director oversees personnel and projects involving Remote and Event productions, and directs the department’s most complex and highest-profile productions. This role maintains presentation quality through oversight, provides cross-departmental direction, and collaborates with Coordinating Producers on content philosophy and execution. The Supervising Director demonstrates strong production and technical knowledge, leadership, and mentors Directors, Associate Directors, and Stage Managers.

Responsibilities

• Oversee multiple remote and REMI production projects.
• Collaborate with production partners to launch productions, maintain standards, and identify workflows to suit changing business needs.
• Organize and lead meetings for assigned projects, both within and across departments, to develop production and operational strategies.
• Direct the broadest possible range of productions, including ESPN’s highest-profile shows.
• Provide staff oversight, with a focus on Associate Directors and Stage Managers.
• Deliver consistent and comprehensive feedback to Directors, Associate Directors, and Stage Managers.
• Establish regular feedback and review sessions with all members of the Directing team.
• Participate in the weekly Directing management meeting.
• Lead teams to drive innovation and new workflows that embrace technology.
• Build monthly schedules for Directors, Associate Directors, and Stage Managers.
• Identify, implement, and track staff development opportunities.
• Contribute to the team’s recruitment and retention objectives.
• Hold staff accountable to maintain the Directing Department performance standards.
• Demonstrate proficiency with set design, animation packages, show budgets, and remote planning.

Requirements

• Minimum 7 years of directing experience with demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills.
• In-depth knowledge and proficiency with live directing.
• In-depth knowledge and proficiency with production equipment and facilities.
• Strong ability to think and react quickly in high-pressure, rapidly changing situations.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated proficiency with set design, animation packages, show budgets, and remote planning.
• Appreciation of popular culture and ability to define ESPN viewer tastes.
• Ability to assess and evaluate job performance, leadership skills, and directing skills.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Education

• Required: High school diploma.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, communications, journalism, or a closely related field.

Pay

The hiring range for this position in Bristol, CT is $168,400 to $225,800 per year based on a 40-hour work week. The base pay offered will consider internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be included, along with medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
