Superivsory Hydrologic Technician

About the role

You will serve as a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician within the Utah Water Science Center. Overnight travel up to 5 nights per month may be required. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Responsibilities

• Supervises all data collection activities for the Moab Field Office to ensure compliance with technical policies, deadlines, and budget limitations as part of cooperation with local, State, and other Federal agencies.
• Exercises broad supervisory responsibilities over employees, including selection, employment, evaluation, and allocation of personnel to projects and program elements.
• Develops staffing plans; recommends selection of employees; provides guidance on work-related issues; approves training; evaluates performance as rating reviewing official; resolves internal problems; recommends awards; and effects or recommends disciplinary action.
• Manages resources responsibly to promote efficiency, sound business practices, and adherence to administrative deadlines.
• Serves as a principal advisor and assistant to the Utah Water Science Center Surveillance Section and Center leadership.
• Serves as a technical expert in data collection methods, providing training, instruction, and advice to technical personnel on USGS standard methods and procedures.
• Maintains close liaison with cooperators and stakeholders responsible for the development and control of natural resources, advising them on problems relating to management and development based on knowledge of conditions and investigation results.
• Operates a government-owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Requirements

• Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
• Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

• This is a supervisory position that may require completion of a supervisory probationary period.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement (09/09/2026). Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.

• For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 to validate your work schedule and determine specialized experience. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable.
• For military service periods, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement.
• For all other applicants, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 level, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service (public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes:

• Planning and conducting the computation and collection of data from approximately thirty or more gaging stations.
• Determining stage-discharge relations, computing rating tables, and calculating mean daily, monthly, and annual discharge rates.
• Acting as a party chief and making indirect measurements of flood flows under difficult conditions.
• Collecting data for computing flood flows by methods such as slope-area, flow over dams, flow through culverts, and flow over embankments.
• Obtaining hydrologic data from published and unpublished sources and conducting hydrologic studies related to flood and drought frequency.
• Planning and coordinating a groundwater survey program for areas with complex features or planning challenges.

Volunteer experience (e.g., through National Service programs like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps) may be credited as paid experience if it builds relevant competencies, knowledge, and skills.

Pay

GS-12 Step 01: $89,508 to Step 10: $116,362. First-time hires to the Federal government normally start at the Step 1 rate.
