Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. It has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

Position Overview

The Superintendent, Technical Training is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of technical training programs across mining operations, maintenance, processing, and support departments. This role ensures employees and contractors are trained, qualified, and competent to safely and efficiently perform their work while supporting operational excellence, regulatory compliance, workforce development, and succession planning. The Superintendent, Technical Training partners closely with operations, maintenance, safety, human resources, and leadership teams to build a high-performance learning culture that supports safe production and long-term organizational capability.

Position Responsibilities

  • Safety & Compliance Leadership: Promote and demonstrate a strong safety culture aligned with company values and regulatory requirements. Ensure all technical training programs comply with MSHA, company policies, and site-specific standards and procedures. Support field verification activities to ensure employees are performing work safely and according to standard operating procedures. Participate in incident investigations and develop training-based corrective actions when applicable. Maintain accurate training records and documentation for regulatory compliance and audits. Lead initiatives focused on reducing operational risk through competency-based training.
  • Training Program Management: Develop and implement a sitewide technical training management plan for operations, maintenance, and processing functions. Oversee onboarding, task training, refresher training, leadership development, and equipment qualification programs. Establish structured training pathways for hourly employees, supervisors, and technical personnel. Coordinate annual training plans aligned with operational priorities and workforce development goals. Evaluate training effectiveness through field observations, assessments, audits, and operational performance metrics. Ensure consistency and standardization of training materials, procedures, and delivery methods across departments. Manage contractor training and orientation requirements.
  • Operational Support: Build processes to work with department leaders to identify competency gaps and workforce development opportunities. Support operational readiness for new equipment, systems, technologies, and process improvements. Coordinate technical training related to mobile equipment, fixed plant maintenance, electrical systems, process operations, and safety-critical tasks. Assist leadership teams with succession planning and employee development initiatives. Drive continuous improvement efforts related to workforce capability, productivity, and operational reliability.
  • Leadership & Team Development: Lead and mentor training coordinators, trainers, and subject matter experts. Foster a collaborative and accountable team environment focused on operational support and employee growth. Build strong working relationships with frontline employees, supervisors, and site leadership. Promote employee engagement through career development and skills advancement opportunities. Support change management initiatives and organizational growth strategies.
  • Administrative & Systems Management: Oversee Learning Management System (LMS) administration and training data accuracy. Prepare and present training metrics, compliance reports, and workforce development updates to leadership. Manage training budgets, vendor relationships, and external training resources. Ensure training materials, procedures, and records are maintained and updated regularly. Support digital learning initiatives and blended training approaches.

Position Requirements

  • Required Tertiary qualification in Technical Training Management or willingness to achieve within 2 years.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in mining, industrial operations, maintenance, or technical workforce training.
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience in any industry.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of MSHA regulations and mining safety practices.
  • Experience developing and delivering technical training programs in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and controlled documentation systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software platforms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments and operational teams.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Training, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified MSHA Instructor credentials.
  • Experience with competency-based training models.
  • Familiarity with heavy mobile equipment, processing operations, and maintenance systems.
  • Experience supporting apprenticeship or workforce development programs.
