Purpose of the Position

The Superintendent, Locomotive Maintenance provides leadership and oversight for all locomotive maintenance activities within the region, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient maintenance and servicing of CPKC's locomotive fleet. This role is accountable for delivering fleet availability in support of the Operating Plan while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, maintenance standards, safety expectations, and budget objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct locomotive maintenance operations across the assigned region, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely execution of maintenance, servicing, and repair activities to meet fleet availability requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with CPKC standards, AAR requirements, and applicable Transport Canada and FRA regulations to maintain a safe, reliable, and regulatory-compliant locomotive fleet.
  • Drive locomotive reliability, availability, and shop-quality performance through effective collaboration with Wabtec, PRS Technical Support, and regional maintenance leadership teams.
  • Achieve annual operating and capital budget targets through disciplined cost management, productivity improvements, and resource optimization.
  • Ensure all facilities operate in compliance with Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) policies while fostering a strong safety culture and risk-management mindset.
  • Establish performance expectations and accountability measures for direct reports, ensuring achievement of operational, safety, financial, and reliability objectives.
  • Lead investigations of safety incidents, rule violations, and operational failures, ensuring appropriate corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence.
  • Oversee workforce planning, employee development, succession planning, labor relations, and collective agreement administration across all facilities within the region.
  • Champion continuous improvement and locomotive reliability initiatives that enhance maintenance processes, service quality, productivity, and fleet performance.
  • Provide 24/7 leadership and operational support for significant safety, service, labor, and business continuity issues, ensuring timely decision-making and stakeholder communication.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general equivalency.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in railway maintenance, locomotive maintenance, or a comparable heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience driving cultural change, accountability, and employee engagement in a safety-focused environment.
  • Proven ability to coach, develop, and manage performance through constructive feedback and balanced corrective action.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and risk assessment skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of locomotive systems, heavy-duty equipment, or similar industrial machinery.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment, including labor relations and collective agreement administration, is considered an asset.

Qualifications

This is a safety-sensitive position. A successful pre-employment medical assessment, including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company or regulated drug test, is required. Post-hire qualification drug testing may also be required.
