Essential Job Responsibilities
- Directs and coordinates the operations of discharge, load, and departure of assigned transportation.
- Serves as first line supervisor of the operations management team and oversees the hiring and firing of labor.
- Supervises personnel in proper operating procedures and works with local management to counsel, discipline, and make hiring and termination decisions.
- Manages equipment and personnel for timely completion of scheduled terminal operations and optimizes resource utilization.
- Works closely with terminal staff to prepare department plans and determine appropriate workforce for efficient and cost-effective completion.
- Supports, monitors, and troubleshoots terminal operating systems to ensure data accuracy.
- Enforces productivity levels by supervising workers and conducting follow-up assessments.
- Completes various reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries.
- Produces reports to respective parties within required deadlines.
- Completes damage reports accurately and reports and reviews incidents and issues to the appropriate manager.
- Maintains a positive working relationship with labor and sets the standard for a safe and efficient operation.
- Plans, holds, and documents daily safety meetings and trains longshore workers on safety procedures.
- Maintains PPE and investigates and reports damages and liabilities.
- Ensures compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations and reports incidents to supervisors immediately.
- Oversees and ensures adherence to all union contracts and policies.
- Coordinates with all parties, vessels, customers, agents, and labor.
- Ensures employees follow company policies and procedures.
- May be required to verify cargo loading and discharging efficiency and adherence to regulations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent experience in management.
- 3 years managing related union labor.
- Valid Driver’s License and CPR certificate required.
- Valid DL and ability to maintain a TWIC card.
- Thorough knowledge of terminal operations and principles.
- Proven leadership skills.
- Experience with computerized operating systems.
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
- Knowledge of cargo stowage and stability.
- Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
- Ability to observe safety and health requirements for container terminal environment.
