About the role
The Superintendent oversees the operations of discharge, load, and departure of assigned transportation, ensuring quality, security, safety, and efficiency. They serve as the first line supervisor for the operations management team and are responsible for the direction and supervision of union labor workers.
Responsibilities
- Hire and fire union labor workers
- Supervise personnel in proper operating procedures
- Manage equipment and personnel for timely terminal operations
- Support, monitor, and troubleshoot terminal operating systems
- Enforce productivity levels through rounds and assessments
- Complete reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries
- Investigate and report damages and liabilities
- Ensure compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations
- Inspect areas for hazards and bring inquiries to management
- Verify efficient and regulated loading and discharging of cargo
- Coordinate with all parties, vessels, customers, agents, and labor
- Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent experience in management
- 3 years managing related union labor
- Valid Driver’s License and CPR certificate
- Thorough knowledge of terminal operations
- Proven leadership skills
- Experience with computerized operating systems
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
- Knowledge of cargo stowage and stability (strongly desired)
- Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules
- Ability to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, and nights at multiple terminals
- Ability to work in extreme outdoor temperatures and conditions
- Ability to drive 10%
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management
- 3 years managing related union labor
- Valid Driver’s License and CPR certificate
- Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations
- Proven leadership skills
- Experience with computerized operating systems
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
- Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
- Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules
- Ability to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, and nights
- Ability to communicate effectively with union workforce and other staff
- Ability to solve problems quickly and effectively
- Ability to plan and organize projects in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous
- Ability to inspect areas for hazards and bring inquiries to management
- Ability to verify efficient and regulated loading and discharging of cargo
- Ability to coordinate with all parties, vessels, customers, agents, and labor
- Ability to ensure adherence to company policies and procedures
