About the role

The Superintendent is responsible for the overall coordination and execution of field operations, with a primary focus on underground wet utility construction including water, sewer, and storm drain systems. This role works closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, Foremen, Safety, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to manage manpower, equipment, scheduling, production, safety, and quality throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee daily field operations for underground utility projects.
  • Supervise Foremen, field crews, subcontractors, and equipment operations.
  • Oversee installation of water, sewer, storm drain, and associated underground infrastructure.
  • Manage trenching, excavation, shoring, pipe installation, backfill, compaction, and restoration activities.
  • Plan manpower, equipment, materials, and daily production requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers and Project Engineers regarding schedules, project progress, RFIs, change conditions, and field issues.
  • Review and interpret construction plans, specifications, grades, and project requirements.
  • Ensure work is completed according to project specifications, municipal standards, and quality expectations.
  • Monitor project schedules and proactively address delays, conflicts, or production challenges.
  • Coordinate equipment needs, utilization, scheduling, and maintenance with appropriate departments.
  • Track daily production, manpower, equipment, materials, and project progress.
  • Conduct and participate in preconstruction meetings, daily planning, safety meetings, and project coordination meetings.
  • Maintain strong communication with inspectors, owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and internal project teams.
  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements, including excavation, trenching, and shoring standards.
  • Identify field risks and implement corrective actions before they impact safety, schedule, quality, or production.
  • Mentor Foremen and field employees while promoting accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain an organized, professional, and safety-focused jobsite.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience, with significant experience in underground wet utilities.
  • Proven Superintendent or senior field leadership experience overseeing underground utility construction.
  • Strong experience with water, sewer, and storm drain installation.
  • Extensive knowledge of trenching, excavation, shoring, backfill, compaction, and underground utility operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise multiple crews, Foremen, subcontractors, and equipment operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, profiles, grades, and project documents.
  • Strong understanding of construction scheduling, production planning, manpower allocation, and equipment utilization.
  • Thorough understanding of OSHA requirements and safe excavation/trenching practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Project Engineers, inspectors, owners, subcontractors, and field personnel.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel between project sites throughout the Phoenix Metro area as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Competent Person – Excavation & Trenching certification.
  • Confined Space certification.
  • Maricopa County Rule 310 certification.
  • Experience working on municipal and public infrastructure projects throughout Arizona.
  • Familiarity with MAG specifications and Arizona municipal construction requirements.
  • CDL preferred but not required.
  • Experience overseeing multiple concurrent crews or projects.

Equipment Experience

Working knowledge of heavy civil construction equipment and its proper utilization, including excavators, loaders, dozers, backhoes, compactors, graders, water trucks, and other equipment commonly used in underground utility and earthwork operations.
