Superintendent

About the Role

Directs activities of workers in the construction of buildings, including airports, stadiums, hotels, infrastructure, and other construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Studies specifications to plan procedures for construction based on starting and completion times and staffing requirements for each phase of construction.
• Assembles members of the organization (supervisory, clerical, engineering, and other workers) at the start of the project.
• Orders tools and materials to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules.
• Confers with and directs supervisory personnel and subcontractors engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.
• Confers with supervisory personnel and labor representatives to resolve complaints and grievances within the workforce.
• Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel, inspectors, and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and improve construction methods.
• Inspects work in progress to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications and adherence to construction schedules.
• Prepares or reviews reports on progress, materials used, and costs, and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.
• Directs workers concerned with major maintenance or reconditioning projects for existing installations.
• Performs work in a safe manner and actively encourages others to comply with safety rules and regulations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
• Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

• Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; or 7 - 10 years of related Civil experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Must be Bilingual.
• Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; explosives; and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
