SUPERINTENDENT

About the role

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting one Superintendent of Adult Institutions to monitor shelter operations and ensure compliance with agency standards, applicable regulations, local laws, and codes that establish basic sanitation, health, and environmental standards.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with security Site Managers and their designees to oversee the activities of security personnel
• Serve as a Certified Fire Safety Coordinator for the shelter to ensure that the facility complies with fire code regulations at all times
• Provide oversight and direction to comprehensive programs in social service, recreation, medical, occupational, mental health, and substance abuse recovery, which provide a continuum of care to shelter residents
• Evaluate and review the effectiveness of program operations and services; ensure maximum utilization of available services for clients
• Facilitate the implementation of new programs and revisions of existing programs
• Participate in the planning of policies, procedures, and programs
• Interface with local Community Boards to promote good relations in the community
• Assume the duties of the Deputy Director of Operations in their absence

Schedule

Sunday to Thursday 8AM-4PM. RDO's Friday and Saturday.

Minimum Qualifications

• Four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time experience in any of the following:
  • Management of a hotel, summer resort, large lodging house, rooming house, home for the aged, nursing home, or an institution providing congregate care
  • As a commissioned or non-commissioned officer in command of a military or paramilitary unit, or as a supervising law enforcement specialist concerned with the overall analysis of security problems
  • Supervision of an organizational segment of at least five individuals engaged in providing social services to a disadvantaged client population
• Education and/or experience equivalent to the above
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college may be accepted as the equivalent of two years of experience
• A master's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work may be accepted as the equivalent of one additional year of experience
• Casework experience in a Welfare Shelter or comparable institution may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years
• All candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least two years of supervisory experience in one or more of the areas listed above

Pay

$77,211.00 – $88,793.00
