ARCO Design/Build is seeking a Superintendent with five or more years of experience leading Food Processing & Manufacturing construction projects. This role involves managing construction and administrative activities to ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with specifications, food safety requirements, and regulations.

About the role

The Superintendent oversees core and shell construction, process areas, equipment installation, and supporting utilities, collaborating with owners, design teams, subcontractors, and vendors through commissioning, start-up, and operational turnover. This position enforces Safety and Quality Control policies while implementing company regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Attend post-award review meetings to gather project details for preplanning.
  • Collaborate with the project manager to prepare construction schedules, organizational structures, staffing plans, and equipment requirements.
  • Ensure adequate manpower and construction equipment are available to meet project timelines.
  • Perform material and quantity estimates for each phase of work.
  • Direct and control construction projects to meet specifications, schedules, and budget while ensuring profitability.
  • Supervise craft superintendents and foremen in their daily duties.
  • Determine and communicate efficient construction techniques to ensure quality and productivity.
  • Assist the project manager with material shipments, shop drawing approvals, change orders, and subcontractor coordination.
  • Ensure all accounting data is submitted in compliance with company procedures.
  • Coordinate subcontractor activities to align with project schedules.
  • Review change orders with the project manager to account for costs, overhead, profit, and time extensions.
  • Assist in preparing job progress and cost reports.
  • Review and approve requisitions, purchase orders, invoices, and payment requests.
  • Maintain open communication with owners and their representatives regarding construction progress.
  • Report regularly to the project manager on job progress, plans, and potential cost or schedule impacts.
  • Maintain a daily diary documenting project events, conditions, contacts, and approvals.
  • Enforce the company’s safety program across all project phases.
  • Familiarize and comply with all company policies, ensuring team adherence.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the project manager.

Requirements

  • 5–10 years of experience as a lead superintendent on food and beverage projects, preferably on facilities of at least 100,000 square feet.
  • Experience managing all phases of facility construction, including sitework, building shell, process equipment installation, commissioning, start-up, and operational turnover.
  • Proven ability to coordinate vendors, equipment suppliers, subcontractors, and owner representatives throughout construction and commissioning.
  • Demonstrated experience managing food safety requirements and enforcing compliance with food safety design criteria.
  • Preferred experience with greenfield projects and modifications within operational facilities, including process line additions.
  • Strong understanding of sequencing and phasing to execute projects safely while maintaining ongoing operations.
  • Ability to make decisions under tight deadlines and manage multiple activities effectively.
  • Leadership skills to direct teams, address challenges, and resolve conflicts.
  • Commitment to quality, using customer feedback to drive improvements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and project scheduling software.
  • Integrity and alignment with company values, focusing on meeting customer expectations.
