Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office. N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

About the role

The Maintenance Superintendent will oversee and manage scheduling, dispatching, administrative operations, and field oversight of skilled craft personnel. The candidate will ensure that craft work is executed per the current collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) and jurisdictional settlements. A thorough understanding of skill sets, tasks, materials, and tools of each craft type is essential. The candidate will track and coordinate required training for all craft personnel, work as part of a team in a rapidly changing environment, and help develop processes for the effective deployment of craft to maximize efficiency and productivity.

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Los Alamos is a tight-knit mountain community that consistently ranks as one of Livability.com’s Best Small Towns in America. The city is a top spot for outdoor enthusiasts with more than 120 hiking and biking trails, and residents enjoy easy access to the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area. Thanks to the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos’ presence, the area has a college-town vibe that’s a major draw for young professionals, families, and retirees.

This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates can successfully perform the job requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, direction, and management of a team of up to 60 specialist craft personnel.
• Direct daily activities through lower field execution leads (foremen/general foremen).
• Concurrently manage multiple projects at multiple locations across the site using union craft with multiple disciplines.
• Effectively plan and resource-load an integrated schedule to accomplish work efficiently.
• Improve organizational culture to ensure all work activities are appropriately scoped, analyzed for hazards, comprehensively planned, performed safely, and executed correctly by trained employees.
• Track, coordinate, and schedule subordinate employees for various training assignments.
• Maintain logs of all company-owned heavy equipment and tools, including tracking preventive maintenance schedules.
• Work with little to no supervision and self-initiate assignments to subordinates.
• Hold clear, concise, and thorough pre-job briefings with subordinate personnel.
• Lead a multi-disciplinary team of skilled trades with an emphasis on safety compliance, production, risk mitigation, and schedule.
• Develop and lead large-sized projects, including defining scope, objectives, methods, resource planning, and integrating into a T-week process.
• Train and mentor more junior staff.
• Identify project safety issues and associated controls.
• Manage, track, and execute preventive and corrective maintenance on a fleet of heavy equipment and tools.
• Plan and coordinate personnel and equipment to support multiple projects at different locations.

Requirements

• Proven and demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities with a history of leading others in high-demand, rapidly changing environments.
• Thorough knowledge of unique access, PPE, accountability, and safety restrictions throughout the site.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to develop and lead large projects, including resource planning and integration into a T-week process.
• Strong commitment to team building and staff development.
• High level of dedication to uphold company stop/pause work authority and apply it when necessary.
• Experience with integrated work control practices.
• Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability, and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Level 1: High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) and at least 0-4 years of relative experience. Must have 3 years of nuclear experience per DOE O 426.2.
• Level 2: High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) and at least 4-7 years of relative experience, including a minimum of 2 years of supervisory responsibility. Must have 3 years of nuclear experience per DOE O 426.2.

Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.

Working Conditions

Assigned to perform work in an office environment and provides oversight of personnel in the field. Field hazards include heat and cold stress, noise, slips/trips/falls, etc. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are expected while work is performed in an office. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline.
