Sunday Reference Librarian

About the role

The Shrewsbury Public Library is seeking a Sunday Reference Librarian to join their team. This seasonal role operates from 12:30pm-5:00pm every Sunday from October to May, with the length of the season potentially varying based on funding resources.

Responsibilities

• Assists patrons with reference and information requests
• Conducts basic research
• Helps patrons with public access catalogs, printers, computers, and online resources
• Trains users on the use of e-readers, tablets, and other devices
• Manages bookings of group study rooms
• Makes information referrals
• Handles issues as they arise
• Works directly with Access services staff, Children’s staff, and the Sunday Supervisor to ensure successful operation of all library services from opening to closing
• Communicates regularly with the Adult Services team to ensure consistency of reference service between weekdays and Sundays
• Oversees the work of library pages, as needed

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required; ALA accredited Masters of Library and Information Sciences Degree preferred
• Two years of professional experience in library reference services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Qualifications

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong proficiency with ILS (preferably Evergreen)
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping
• Knowledge of library practices and procedures, and the ability to manage materials effectively
• Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues and patrons
• Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
