About the role

The Summer Institute Program Teacher provides high-level instructional leadership and expertise, ensuring the effective delivery and development of a rigorous academic program for the district's students. This role is responsible for enhancing the educational experience by designing and executing a comprehensive program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and developmental abilities of all learners.

Responsibilities

  • Strategically plan and execute a comprehensive program of study that aligns with district standards while remaining responsive to the individual needs, interests, and developmental abilities of all students.
  • Establish and maintain a rigorous yet supportive classroom environment that is conducive to high-level learning and appropriate to the maturity and diverse interests of the student body.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established curriculum goals by defining clear instructional objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and effectively communicate these targets to students.
  • Employ research-based instructional methods and specialized materials tailored to meet stated objectives and ensure academic growth for all learner profiles.
  • Systematically assess student accomplishments on a regular basis, utilizing data to provide comprehensive progress reports and inform future instructional pivots.
  • Serve as a primary resource for students, colleagues, and families by engaging in regular, professional consultation to support holistic student development and academic success.
  • Aid in the implementation of district policies and safety protocols; develop and uphold equitable classroom procedures to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise purposeful assignments for program aides, interns, and volunteers to maximize their impact on student learning and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to manage program transitions, attendance, and student safety protocols effectively.

Requirements

Candidates holding a valid license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) are preferred. Current employees of Framingham Public Schools are preferred.

Training and Experience

  • An educational requirement of a high school diploma is required; additional post-secondary education credits in a related field are preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as an educator in a school or community-based setting is required.
  • Basic knowledge of effective youth development and Out-of-School Time (OST) principles, practices, and trends is required.
  • Experience with curriculum design and lesson planning is preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is strongly preferred.

  • Communication & Presentation: Communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written forms; effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, parents, and the general public.
  • Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving: Read, analyze, and interpret professional periodicals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to inform decisions for student success.
  • Relationship Building & Cultural Proficiency: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, caregivers, staff, and the community. Work with individuals and families of diverse backgrounds in an equitable, inclusive, and culturally proficient manner.
  • Professionalism, Attendance & Adaptability: Maintain regular and punctual attendance to ensure consistent department operations and district-wide support. React professionally and objectively to unpredictable situations, such as behavioral issues or environmental changes, while maintaining a proactive, reflective, and solution-focused approach.
  • Organizational Management: Work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage several projects simultaneously while maintaining strong organizational skills to balance the demands of a multi-tasking position.
  • Compliance & Confidentiality: Perform duties with awareness of district requirements, state and federal laws, and Framingham Public Schools policies. Maintain appropriate confidential records in accordance with FERPA/603 CMR 28.00.
  • Instructional Leadership: Apply knowledge of current research and theory in education. Demonstrate strong teaching, coaching, and leadership skills in a team setting.
  • Technology: Operate and acquire skills in computer software, including Google Workspace, and use instructional technology appropriately to facilitate learning.

Physical Working Conditions

  • Mobility & Navigation: Must move throughout school buildings and grounds frequently; navigate quickly across even or uneven surfaces to respond to student needs or emergencies.
  • Stationary Tasks: Often remains in a stationary position for administrative tasks, such as reporting and data entry.
  • Technology & Data: Ability to read and input digital and printed data (e.g., complex IEP/evaluative reports) using office productivity machinery.
  • Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of hands/arms to operate technology and handle instructional or administrative tools.
  • Physical Strength: Ability to lift at least 20 lbs (e.g., books, supplies, or medical/adaptive equipment).
  • Sensory Requirements: Must see and hear on a continuous basis to ensure student safety in a dynamic environment.
  • Working Environment: Works in a school setting with moderate-to-high noise levels; requires the ability to maintain focus amid frequent interruptions.
  • Crisis Management: Ability to physically engage with and redirect students who exhibit challenging or aggressive behaviors to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Physical Stamina: Sufficient physical strength and agility to manage active behavioral interventions and ensure student supervision during periods of emotional dysregulation.
  • Interaction Level: Must frequently sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to interact with early childhood students at their eye level.
  • Physical Lifting: Ability to lift and/or move at least 40 lbs (e.g., lifting small children, moving play equipment, or utilizing adaptive medical equipment).
  • Hygiene & Safety: Directly responsible for safety and well-being; includes potential exposure to bodily fluids or pathogens associated with early childhood care (e.g., diapering and toileting).

Reports to

The Summer Institute Program Teacher reports to the Summer Institute Program Director (and/or designee).

Terms of Employment

  • Program Duration: This role is for July and early August.
  • Candidates must be available to attend all mandatory summer program orientation and training days held in late June.
  • Attendance Requirement: Consistent attendance for the full duration of the summer programming is a prerequisite for eligibility and continued employment in this role.
  • Contractual Status: This position is covered under the Framingham School Committee Contract.
  • Operational Flexibility: The District reserves the right to transfer personnel to different school sites or programs based on student enrollment, specialized needs, and the best interests of the children.
