About the role

This is a temporary Summer 2027 internship (not to exceed 12 weeks) for a Structural Dynamics Engineer. You will perform structural dynamic analysis on spacecraft and lunar vehicles in multiple NASA human spaceflight programs, including Orion, Gateway, Human Landing System, Commercial Crew Program, Lunar Terrain Vehicle, Pressurized Rover, and others.

Responsibilities

  • Perform finite element model checks, dynamic model reductions, coupled loads analysis, interpret results, and communicate results to peers and management
  • Perform dynamic analyses using commercial and in-house codes, write new simulation scripts and code (typically with Python) as needed
  • Perform vibroacoustic analysis on finite element models in preparation for acoustic and random vibration tests
  • Identify critical modes for a component or integrated system
  • Review and process modal and structural data (analytical and test)
  • Develop and/or review test plans and procedures, documenting test results
  • Perform signal processing on analytical and/or test data

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university
  • Completed at least 45 credit hours
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA
  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Aerospace Engineering
  • Coursework in Statics and Dynamics
  • Working knowledge of Python, MATLAB, or C/C++
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with desktop software applications (MS Office required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working toward a BS or MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Coursework in Finite Element Analysis, Linear Algebra, Structural Dynamics, Vibrations, Signal Processing, Data Analysis and Reporting, or Structural Analysis
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Experience coding/scripting with Python, MATLAB, or C/C++
  • Experience using FEA software and a pre/post-processor
  • Experience with Unix/Linux
  • Familiarity with version control methods such as GitLab or GitHub

Work Environment

  • Generally an office environment, but may involve inside or outside work depending on task
  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time)
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs (5% of time)
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust to meet peak periods and surge requirements
