Primary Responsibilities
- Perform utility designation in accordance with ASCE 38 standards.
- Locate and mark underground utilities using electromagnetic locating equipment.
- Conduct utility investigations for public and private utility systems.
- Perform field reconnaissance and utility inventory collection.
- Perform measure-downs (dips) of accessible storm and sanitary manholes and inlets.
- Read and interpret utility records, maps, plans, and as-built drawings.
- Collect utility survey data using GPS, total stations, and other geospatial equipment.
- Document utility conflicts and underground infrastructure conditions.
- Support utility test hole (vacuum excavation) operations and verify utility locations.
- Maintain accurate daily field notes and project documentation.
- Ensure compliance with project safety requirements and company policies.
- Provide hands-on field training and mentorship to junior crew members on subsurface utility data collection.
Required Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- An associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
- 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in SUE, utility locating, surveying, or utility engineering support.
- Demonstrated experience leading field investigations and utility designation projects.
- Experience operating electromagnetic utility locating equipment.
- Ability to read engineering plans, utility records, and construction drawings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Advanced understanding of ASCE 38 utility quality levels.
- Ability to read engineering plans, utility records, and construction drawings.
- Experience coordinating with utility owners and project stakeholders.
- Ability to train and mentor junior staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Utility locating certifications.
- Geomatics, surveying, or GIS experience.
- Experience with: Trimble GPS equipment, Total stations, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), GIS software, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation.
- Knowledge of state DOT utility requirements.
- Experience supporting transportation, roadway, bridge, aviation, or municipal infrastructure projects.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
