SUE Field Technician

About the Role

T. Baker Smith is seeking an entry-level Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Field Technician to work on a team in the field using the latest utility designating, locating, and vacuum excavation equipment and technology.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with the Project Manager, project team, and client field representative.
• Select and apply appropriate geophysical prospecting equipment to accurately designate underground utility layouts.
• Operate and drive a vacuum excavation truck and perform test holes to expose utilities.
• Complete documentation, including record-keeping and simple mathematics, legibly and accurately.
• Select and implement proper maintenance of traffic signage.
• Communicate and coordinate with utility company representatives.
• Represent and communicate on behalf of T. Baker Smith and crew when encountering third parties in the field.
• Complete daily job safety analysis forms.
• Inspect assigned equipment to ensure proper working conditions prior to use.
• Identify and report any equipment failure on work order maintenance forms.
• Perform work in a safe and efficient manner.
• Report incidents to the appropriate personnel and complete incident reports as required.
• Monitor work conditions and responsibly use stop-work authority.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently required to stand, walk long distances while carrying equipment (sometimes through rugged terrain, mud, or swamp), drive and/or ride in a boat, sit, balance, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Use hands to operate, handle, maneuver, and/or manipulate objects, tools, or controls.
• Reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate equipment.
• Talk and hear.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Ability to perform physical movements and tractions, commensurate with operating heavy tools and equipment.
• Possess basic computer skills and able to learn and understand new software.
• Ability to operate surveying instruments, boats, airboats, GPS, all-terrain vehicles, and other equipment necessary to obtain survey data.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Work Environment

• Generally outdoors and exposed to weather conditions.
• Frequently ride in a motorized vehicle and exposed to noise, dust, smells, and other environmental factors.
