About the Role

The Elementary Teacher position supports the instructional process by supervising students, developing and delivering lesson plans within established curriculum guidelines, collaborating with staff and administrators, and maintaining regular communication with families. This role ensures a safe learning environment, assesses student knowledge, and responds to parent inquiries about instructional programs and student progress. The teacher reports to the Building Principal.

Responsibilities

  • Adapt classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
  • Administer developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments (e.g., common formative assessments, state standards, common core) to assess student competency and develop individual learning plans.
  • Advise parents and guardians of student progress, communicating expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
  • Assess student progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals (e.g., state standards, district curriculum, cultural activities) and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Counsel students to improve performance, health status, problem-solving techniques, and address personal issues.
  • Demonstrate methods for classroom and subject-specific assignments, including planning, maintaining high expectations, integrating cultural activities, and teaching district-approved curriculum.
  • Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to provide an effective classroom program and address individual student needs.
  • Facilitate student learning to achieve success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through defined lesson plans.
  • Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Model conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening skills, and cultural beliefs to demonstrate appropriate social and interpersonal behavior.
  • Monitor students in various educational environments (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, breakfast, lunch) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Organize age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities (e.g., cultural activities, field trips, daily instruction) to ensure student participation in learning activities.
  • Participate in meetings (e.g., staff meetings, IEP, BIT, in-service, workshops) to convey and gather information required for job functions.
  • Prepare written and electronic materials (e.g., grades, attendance records, anecdotal records, lesson plans with identifiable goals and objectives, learning outcomes, assessments) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety, a positive learning environment, and adherence to laws and policies.
  • Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators to resolve issues, provide information, or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Respond to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Support other classroom teachers and departments to assist in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • Skills to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks, including applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment and software, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Knowledge of basic math, reading technical information, composing documents, facilitating discussions, and analyzing situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Competencies in appropriate codes, policies, regulations, age-appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, stages of child development, and behavioral management strategies.
  • Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather, collate, and classify data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and groups, adapt to changing work priorities, maintain confidentiality, exhibit tact and patience, and work flexible hours.
  • Problem-solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans, including independent interpretation of guidelines and moderate troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Competencies in establishing and maintaining constructive relationships.

Qualifications

  • Job-related experience is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a job-related area.
  • Substitute Teacher Permit or equivalent certification.
  • Completion of 3 credits in Native American Studies or similar coursework within 2 years of hire date.
  • Clearances: Criminal Background Clearance and Drug Test.

Work Environment

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The job involves 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. It is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard-free environment.
