The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) requires a criminal history background check for all applicants seeking a Wisconsin educator license/permit. This check aims to ensure the applicant does not pose a threat to students' health, welfare, safety, or education.

Criminal History Background Check

• All applicants must complete a Conduct and Competency questionnaire and provide all required documentation and information.
• If misconduct is reported, applicants must submit a written explanation along with relevant documents such as criminal complaints, judgments, police reports, and disciplinary letters.
• Supporting documents must be uploaded as attachments in the online application system.
• Failure to submit all necessary information can cause delays and may lead to application denial.
• Applicants who have worked, resided, or attended classes in certain locations within the past twenty years are required to submit fingerprints to the DPI.
• Applicants whose addresses are in these locations must also submit fingerprints.
