Substitute School Nurse RN 2025-2026

The Springfield Public Schools is seeking a Registered Nurse to join our team. This position reports to the Principal and Nursing Supervisor of Nursing.

About the role

This position involves assessing and evaluating students' health, conducting research, and coordinating health resources. It also includes preparing written reports, developing individual health care plans, and administering medication with parental/guardian and physician consent.

Responsibilities

• Assess and evaluate students' health, pertinent family history, and home factors.
• Counsel students, parents, and school personnel about health problems and issues.
• Maintain health records and conduct evaluations of school health programs.
• Notify appropriate individuals of immediate and potential health-related problems.
• Coordinate health resources by making necessary arrangements, maintaining records, and notifying and counseling students, parents/guardians, and health personnel.
• Prepare regular written reports for supervisor, MDPH, and other relevant agencies.
• Develop and coordinate an individual health care plan as needed.
• Document pertinent information in student records according to the Standards of Practice.
• Provide emergency care for students on school premises in case of injury or sudden illness.
• Perform site-mandated screenings such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, and TB testing.
• Initiate, promote, and implement programs for recognizing, preventing, and controlling disease, including giving immunizations.
• Collaborate with staff in school and health centers.
• Participate in school health-related activities as deemed appropriate by the principal/supervisor.
• Act as a resource in health education to students and families.
• Provide information about health and disease prevention in cooperation with health education programs as requested by administrators.
• Perform sport physical clearances as needed.

Requirements

• A current valid license to practice as a Nurse in Massachusetts.
• Three years of responsible professional experience in school nursing or a related field (preferred).
• Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
