About the role
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is seeking highly motivated and energetic applicants for the position of school nurse. Applicants should have a good attitude, willingness to learn, and passion for impactful work and learning.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in the development and evaluation of school-based health policies and procedures
- Participate on the Student Support and Intervention Team (SSIT)
- Develop Individualized Care Plans (IHP) and monitor interventions and outcomes
- Develop Emergency Health Plans (EHP) for school staff to inform critical response and outline emergency procedures for students with life-threatening health conditions
- Serve as an active participation on Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 teams
- Educate school staff about implications of chronic illness as it relates to school and academic success
- Plan and implement systems for the safe and meaningful transitions of students with IHPs and EHPs between environments
- Partner with families to coordinate primary and specialty care
- Consult with and refer to community partners to assure safe and continued health care of students
- Facilitate enrollment in BadgerCare for eligible students
- Enroll eligible students in Primary Access for Kids
- Provide formal classroom instruction (i.e. human growth and development)
- Provide informal instruction during health office visits with students and families, including self-advocacy skills and health care literacy
- Implement health promotion activities targeted to school-wide audiences
- Provide group interventions consistent with tier 2 practices
- In consultation with building principal, monitor environmental safety (i.e. playground, air quality, communicable disease and other potential hazards)
- Ensure student compliance with Wisconsin immunization requirements
- Monitor and manage episodes of building-based communicable disease, in accordance with MMSD health services guidelines
- Plan, implement, and provide student follow-up for health screening programs at specified grades (vision, hearing, dental, mental health)
- Serve as a member of the school crisis response team
- Respond to all health emergencies in the school setting
- Collaborate with other school team members to develop evacuation plans for students with mobility needs or other factors that require individual accommodations
- Team with other student services staff on violence risk assessments (VRA) and suicide risk assessments (SRA)
- Provide emergency treatment for anaphylaxis and severe asthma episode
- Direct the provision of care by nurse assistant
- Provide care for injuries and acute health concerns
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a university or college school of nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Current valid license to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Wisconsin per Chapter 441, Wisconsin Statutes, and Section N2.04 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code
- Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction (DPI) Nurse license must be obtained within 3 years of employment
- Current CPR/AED certification
- Basic Emergency Care Course - must complete within 6 months of employment or have completed within 3 years prior to employment
- Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work towards improving one's own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)
Qualifications
- Previous school nurse experience
- 2 to 3 years experience in a hospital or clinic setting
- Master’s prepared pediatric or family nurse practitioner with appropriate certification
- Master’s degree in nursing or other related field
- National School Nurse Certification

Annual Compensation: $64,688 (25-26 TE Salary Schedule)
