ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
- Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects.
- Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians.
- Counsels parents and maintains liaison between physicians, parents, and staff.
- Makes recommendations to primary care physicians on health needs of individual students.
- Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention.
- Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.
- Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
- Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
- Implements board policy on exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
- Trains students related to handicap, health, and hygiene.
- Aids school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
- Prepares statistical reports as required by Dept. of Education, Department of Human Services, and Superintendent.
- Fosters school health policies, goals, and objectives.
- Prepares a budget for school health needs.
- Serves on the Pupil Evaluation Team when student health problems are involved.
- Arranges for the exclusion of students in connection with possible infestations and contagious diseases.
- Maintains current immunization levels of all students as required by Maine law.
- Participates in kindergarten registration health aspects.
- Manages school health services under the direction of the Superintendent and Principal, in compliance with school district policy.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Bachelor's or associate's degree in nursing.
- Experience: Experience with handicapped children.
- Licenses: License from the State of Maine to practice as a Registered Nurse and proper Department of Education certification.
