Substitute School Nurse

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
• Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects.
• Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians.
• Counsels parents and maintains liaison between physicians, parents, and staff.
• Makes recommendations to primary care physicians on health needs of individual students.
• Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention.
• Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.
• Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
• Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
• Implements board policy on exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
• Trains students related to handicap, health, and hygiene.
• Aids school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
• Prepares statistical reports as required by Dept. of Education, Department of Human Services, and Superintendent.
• Fosters school health policies, goals, and objectives.
• Prepares a budget for school health needs.
• Serves on the Pupil Evaluation Team when student health problems are involved.
• Arranges for the exclusion of students in connection with possible infestations and contagious diseases.
• Maintains current immunization levels of all students as required by Maine law.
• Participates in kindergarten registration health aspects.
• Manages school health services under the direction of the Superintendent and Principal, in compliance with school district policy.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Education: Bachelor's or associate's degree in nursing.
• Experience: Experience with handicapped children.
• Licenses: License from the State of Maine to practice as a Registered Nurse and proper Department of Education certification.
