About the Role

The Substitute School Bus Driver is responsible for transporting students over scheduled routes and special excursions, enforcing safety rules and regulations, ensuring vehicle safety, and maintaining order among student passengers.

Responsibilities

  • Drives a school transportation vehicle within prescribed routes, picking up and discharging students at designated stops.
  • Escorts and assists students on and off the vehicle and across streets when necessary.
  • Transports students and teachers on field trips, planning necessary routes and stops.
  • Maintains order and discipline of student passengers according to District policy; instructs students on safety regulations.
  • Conducts daily safety and operational inspections of the assigned vehicle.
  • Checks fluid and air levels; adds fuel, water, or air as necessary.
  • Maintains vehicle cleanliness, sweeping and washing the interior and exterior as required.
  • Reports needed mechanical repairs and ensures bus security at all times.
  • Evacuates vehicle safely during emergencies and conducts periodic evacuation drills as required by law.
  • Maintains accurate records, including student counts, time sheets, mileage, repair requests, and discipline notices.
  • Attends meetings on safety, first aid, and training updates as required.
  • Participates in driver training programs to maintain knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code.
  • Assists other personnel as needed to support their work activities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and "S" Endorsements.
  • School Bus Driver’s Certificate and evidence of insurability.
  • Medical Certificate, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Drug Testing Clearance, and negative TB test results.
  • Fully certified as a School Bus Driver with a safe driving record compliant with California Vehicle Code.

Skills and Abilities

  • Skills to operate school buses and vans safely, communicate effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of vehicle operation, basic maintenance, and driving codes.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods, follow oral and written instructions, and work independently.
  • Physical abilities include climbing, balancing, reaching, handling, and near/far visual acuity.

Pay

$22.00 per hour (single rate).

Schedule

Part-time, on-call position with 5 or more hours per day.
