Pay Range: PSE 1 Salary Schedule. Substitutes subbing in PSE 1 positions will be paid at Step 1 of Schedule A appropriate for the position being subbed.

About the role

The job of "Nutritional Services Helper" involves preparing and distributing food items for consumption by students and school personnel and maintaining facilities in a sanitary condition.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Clean utensils, equipment, and storage, food preparation, and serving areas to maintain sanitary conditions.
  • Ensure foods reach and maintain proper temperatures and log them to meet mandated food safety requirements.
  • Estimate food preparation amounts to meet projected meal requirements and minimize waste.
  • Inspect food and supplies to verify quantity and specifications of orders and comply with health requirements.
  • Prepare documentation to provide written support and convey information.
  • Prepare food and beverage items to meet mandated nutritional requirements and projected meal needs.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, staff, and the public regarding meal types and costs.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to maintain safe working order.
  • Report accidents or injuries immediately to the Nutritional Services Manager to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Serve food items to meet nutritional requirements and student/staff requests.
  • Stock food, condiments, and supplies to maintain adequate quantities and security.
  • Assist other personnel to support their work activities.
  • Bake items to provide food for projected meal requirements.
  • Perform other duties, participate in meetings, and attend in-service offerings to stay current in the field.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, regulations, and policies.

Requirements

  • Prior job-related experience in food preparation, serving, and basic kitchen activities.
  • Skills to perform basic arithmetic, adjust recipes, operate institutional kitchen equipment, and use computers.
  • Knowledge of modern food preparation methods, health codes, sanitation principles, and nutritional/safety requirements.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, understand and follow instructions, supervise students, and work as a team member.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; prior job-related experience with increasing responsibility.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance and completion of a district-administered achievement test in mathematics, spelling, and pronunciation.
  • Appropriate Food Handler Permit and Hepatitis A vaccines.
  • Neat, clean personal appearance and appropriate attire; regular and consistent attendance.

Physical Demands

The role involves heavy physical work, including:

  • Standing (45% of the time), walking (45%), and sitting (10%).
  • Constant lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 lbs (e.g., sacks of flour, cases of soft drinks, trays, carts).
  • Frequent stooping (e.g., low racks, ovens) and reaching/handling/fingering (e.g., dishes, utensils, food, cash).
  • Constant talking and hearing conversations and other sounds (e.g., mixers, pots/pans).
  • Constant visual acuity for tasks like serving and preparing food.

Work Environment

  • 80% inside work (primary activity) and 20% outside work.
  • Frequent exposure to extreme heat (stoves, ovens, fryers) and constant wet/humid conditions (washing dishes/pans/hands).
  • Noise levels up to 80 decibels (e.g., mixers, pots/pans banging).
  • Frequent exposure to fumes (solvents, ovens), occasional odors (cleaners, bleach), and occasional dust (flour, pollen).
  • Frequent burn hazards (ovens, steam tables, hot pans) and other hazards (wet/slippery surfaces).
  • Protective clothing/devices required: latex/mesh gloves, hair nets, back braces, aprons.
