Substitute Nurse - LPN (2025-2026)
About the role
The Springfield Public Schools seeks a dedicated School Nurse to join our team. This position requires a current valid license to practice as a Nurse in Massachusetts and three years of responsible professional nursing experience in school nursing or a related field. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing and evaluating students' health, maintaining health records, coordinating health resources, and providing emergency care and medication administration.
Responsibilities
- Assess and evaluate students' health, pertinent family history, and home factors
- Counsel students, parents, and school personnel about health problems and issues
- Maintain health records and conduct research on school health programs
- Notify appropriate individuals of immediate and potential health-related problems
- Coordinate health resources of the school, home, community, and allied health agencies/hospitals
- Prepare regular written reports for supervisor, MDPH, and other relevant agencies
- Develop and coordinate individual health care plans as needed
- Document pertinent information in student records according to the Standards of Practice
- Provide emergency care for students on school premises in case of injury or sudden illness
- Administer medication to students with parent/guardian and physician consent
- Perform site-mandated screenings in vision, hearing, scoliosis, TB testing, and other health-related activities as required by state and city departments of public health
- Provide information about health and disease prevention in collaboration with health education programs
- Participate in school health-related activities as deemed appropriate by the principal/supervisor
- Initiate, promote, maintain, and implement programs for recognizing, preventing, and controlling disease, including giving immunizations
- Collaborate with staff in school and health centers
- Perform sport physical clearances as needed
Qualifications
- A current valid license to practice as a Nurse in Massachusetts
- Three years of responsible professional nursing experience in school nursing or a related field preferred
