General Statement of Responsibilities
To assist in providing health care services to students and staff.
Principal Duties
- Attends to the needs of students and staff that become ill or have accidents requiring medical attention.
- Makes necessary referrals to healthcare resources in the community after consulting with the nurse.
- Assists in maintaining the school health office and health records.
- Assists the nurse in ensuring all students have required immunizations. Prepares list of students not current for the nurse to consult with the building Principal.
- Assists with vision and hearing screening.
- Assists nurses with the administration of medications in accordance with district policy and the Nurse Practice Act.
- Monitors supplies and equipment.
- Completes and maintains paperwork, reports, and files.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the building Principal and the Lead District Nurse.
- Maintains daily log of all students seen in the health office.
- Completes accident reports clearly and concisely. Leaves them for the school nurse to follow up before completing the form.
- Assists with the enrollment of students, reviews all immunizations prior to the student attending school, and consults nurse as needed.
- Notifies the building Principal and the Lead District Nurse of all emergencies and outbreaks of infectious diseases.
- Reports suspected child neglect/abuse.
- Attends staff meetings and professional development.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Knowledge of medical terminology and basic medical procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA guidelines, rules and regulations.
- Skill in performing basic medical procedures.
- Skill in maintaining files, reports and other medical documentation.
- Skill in operating office equipment, and computer applications.
- Skill in communicating orally and in writing.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with both adults and children.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1 year of health experience is recommended but not required.
- Valid Arizona DPS IVP Fingerprint Clearance card.
Required License/Certification
Preferred:
- Medical Assistant Certification.
- Nursing Assistant Certification, Emergency Technician Certification, or Medication Aide Certification
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and AED Certification
- American Heart First Aid Course completed within 3 months of hire
- Hearing and Vision Screening Certification as class space is available.
