Substitute Bus Drivers operate school buses in accordance with state and district guidelines, ensuring safe student transport on regular routes and extracurricular trips. Hours and days vary depending on school schedules, inclement weather, and route needs.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate school buses on assigned routes or to designated events.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus.
  • Ensure student safety and appropriate behavior during transport.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and school staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of routes and vehicle conditions.

Requirements

  • Hold a valid Oregon CDL with a school bus endorsement, or be willing to obtain one through the district’s training program.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and professionalism.
  • Commitment to student safety and ability to work with children.
  • Availability on short notice.
  • Ability to thrive as part of a team focused on student well-being.

Licensing Process

EPSD9 welcomes both experienced drivers and newcomers. If you do not already possess an Oregon CDL with a school bus endorsement, the district will support you through the licensing process:

  • Take four written tests at the DMV to receive a CDL permit.
  • Complete 15–60 hours of training with the Transportation Department (average training period is approximately 30 days).
  • Return to the DMV for a road test to obtain the full CDL.

The total cost for obtaining a CDL is approximately $138, which the district will reimburse after 60 days of employment as a Substitute Bus Driver. A $71.50 fingerprinting fee is required by law and must be paid at the time of processing.

Pay

Salary range: $20.95 to $28.75 per hour (based on the 2023–2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement). Placement depends on verified full-time experience in a similar position.

Substitute drivers who transition to a permanent bargaining position as a bus driver will receive a $500 signing stipend after 30 calendar days of employment, and an additional $500 stipend after 8 months of service.
