About the role
This position serves on an on-call/substitute basis, transporting students and authorized individuals to and from school, field trips, and other activities as directed by school district officials.
Responsibilities
- Drive a school bus to transport students safely to and from school and field trips.
- Operate the bus under various weather conditions, including fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow, and ice.
- Operate the bus according to Washington State laws and policies set by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
- Maintain the bus and related equipment, inspecting and cleaning as required by state and district policies.
- Refuel the bus in accordance with department procedures or as needed.
- Maintain control of student passengers to ensure their safety.
- Report unsafe acts or conditions requiring attention beyond the driver's scope.
- Administer discipline policies and procedures as appropriate.
- Maintain a positive atmosphere on the bus and serve as a role model for students.
- Complete forms, records, and reports as required by state or local district policies.
- Maintain and update route maps.
- Communicate with the transportation office using a two-way radio as necessary.
- Perform required operational and safety inspections of the bus and related equipment.
- Report immediately any mechanical defects or safety hazards to the director, coordinator, or lead mechanic.
- Establish and maintain effective positive relationships with staff, students, and community groups.
- Perform basic first aid as needed, including CPR.
- Attend transportation in-service meetings and training as necessary.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Possession or ability to obtain a Class B CDL with passenger endorsement.
- Valid First Aid card including CPR.
- Minimum of 21 years of age.
- Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
Skills
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and desire to learn about others' identities.
- Ability to establish and nurture an environment promoting cultural competence and equitable treatment.
- Effective communication skills with students, staff, and the public.
- Knowledge of operation of emergency school bus equipment and accessories.
- Knowledge of safety and security procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
