Substitute - Building Nurse

About the role

This at-will position reports to building administration or designee and requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois with good standing with the Illinois Board of Nursing. Prior experience of one to three years in nursing is required, with preference for community health, pediatrics, emergency care and triage, psychiatry, and/or physician’s office settings.

Responsibilities

• Manage and coordinate building health services in accordance with district policies, procedures, protocols, and local, state, and national regulations; maintain and operate the building nurse’s office.
• Ensure compliance with procedures, protocols, and instructions from the lead nurse or district manuals.
• Collaborate with team members to maintain, promote, and provide student health, wellness, and safety.
• Administer mandated screenings to identify medical conditions and provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, or injured children.
• Assess safety, abuse, and other health-related issues; identify problems, refer for treatment, and comply with legal requirements.
• Establish and update health and immunization records; prepare and maintain confidential student health records and required reports.
• Administer daily and PRN medications and nursing care procedures as prescribed by a student’s physician.
• Initiate emergency procedures and first aid for students and staff as needed.
• Work with parents and physicians to develop individual health care and emergency care plans for students with special needs, including integration into 504 Plans.
• Implement health care plans for students with chronic health problems.
• Maintain contact with parents/guardians regarding changes in a student’s health and recommend further medical intervention.
• Assist with health assessments of students being evaluated for IEP or 504 eligibility.
• Orient staff and teach specific skills/procedures to ensure the health and safety of medically complex students in the classroom.
• Maintain standards regarding bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.
• Provide health education and anticipatory counseling.
• Act as a liaison between school, private health care providers, the health department, and community agencies.
• Maintain clinic equipment; assess annual consumable supply needs and prepare orders.
• Respond to emergency medical situations.
• Provide training on health-related topics to promote healthy lifestyles for staff, students, and parents.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited nursing program; Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred.
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois and in good standing with the Illinois Board of Nursing.
• Minimum of one to three years nursing experience; experience in community health, pediatrics, emergency care and triage, psychiatry, and/or physician’s office preferred.

Skills

• Foundational knowledge of board policy, facility management, operations systems, and technology usage.
• Ability to use clinic/medical equipment; basic pharmacological knowledge; assess emergency situations and act accordingly.
• Knowledge of universal precautions and ability to teach others.
• Strong oral and written communication skills; basic computer skills.
• Willingness to be part of the school team; strong sense of professionalism.
• Management and organizational ability; common sense; motivation; positive attitude.

Pay

$160 per day.

Schedule

Multiple placements district-wide; availability required as needed.

Physical demands

Requires standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, simple grasping, pushing/pulling, fine and gross motor skills, bending, lifting, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching. Ability to lift students as required and stamina to stand all day as needed.

Work environment

Occasional work in classrooms with children, outdoor weather conditions, and environments with office and educational noise. Personal computing skills required for web browsers, word processing, spreadsheets, and student information systems.
