Substation Working Foreman/Superintendent – High Voltage Electrical Construction

About the role

Family-owned electrical contractor Hayden Power Group seeks a Substation General Foreman to lead multiple commercial, industrial, and specialty electrical projects up to $10 million, including medium and high voltage substation construction. The role focuses on crew supervision, safety, efficiency, and coordination with customers and stakeholders while maintaining high standards in energy infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

• Oversee, coordinate, pre-plan, and schedule all aspects of multiple electrical construction projects, including manpower, equipment, tools, and materials in conjunction with project management, trades, subcontractors, vendors, and customers.
• Lay out all types of work including site and civil work; apply thorough knowledge of electrical materials, tools, and tasks for commercial, industrial, or specialty installations.
• Travel and, when required, stay overnight at out-of-town project sites for extended periods.
• Provide skilled expertise in 138kV, 69kV, and 15kV installations, troubleshooting, and work around medium and high voltage equipment.
• Build and maintain professional relationships with company personnel, customers, management, field teams, vendors, and subcontractors.
• Execute and manage daily paperwork including manpower scheduling, daily journals, and team tasks.
• Analyze and interpret blueprints (architectural, civil, electrical, fire suppression, HVAC, plumbing) and work scopes, including change orders.
• Manage and collect bills of materials; identify labor needs for change order management and time-and-materials work; monitor change order opportunities and risks; approve change orders prior to work completion.
• Review and approve manpower timecards weekly for payroll submission by Monday morning.
• Attend weekly and monthly company meetings to improve team and company performance.
• Troubleshoot electrical systems across commercial, industrial, and specialty applications.
• Coordinate all required inspections and work with Safety to ensure compliance with the Hayden safety program, including hazard remediation, accident investigations, toolbox talks, and team member compliance.
• Maintain orderly and safe work areas; ensure project materials, tools, and equipment are properly stored and secured.
• Direct, mentor, and coach team leads, journeymen, and apprentices; complete ongoing and annual performance evaluations.
• Actively participate in field work when needed while overseeing crew operations.
• Communicate professionally with employees, management, and customers.
• Conform to company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a supervisory or team leader role with demonstrated project leadership and management abilities.
• Journeyman License required in applicable state, locales, or projects.
• Valid Driver’s License, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation.
• OSHA 30 certification and MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) certifications are a plus.
• Valid first aid/CPR certification.

Skills

• Expertise in 138kV, 69kV, and 15kV equipment and all types of testing equipment and circuits.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and supervision skills.
• Ability to manage and oversee all aspects of construction projects as General Foreman on site.
• Maintain working knowledge of applicable electrical codes, including NEC and NFPA standards; attend NEC seminars.
• Proficiency with computers and relevant job-required hardware/software (e.g., iPad, laptop).
• Proficiency in testing electrical systems.
• Perform physically demanding tasks: digging trenches, laying conduit, lifting up to 50 lbs., operating two-handed tools/equipment, and using mechanical hydraulic lifts.
• Operate company trucks and equipment (e.g., trenchers, backhoes) safely as required.
• Ability to communicate clearly and follow instructions; commitment to company values and “Safety First” mindset.

Working Conditions

• Work outdoors in all weather conditions depending on job location and season (heat, cold, rain, snow).
• Physical demands include standing, bending, reaching, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead for extended periods; frequent walking and repetitive hand/arm/finger movements.
• Normal or corrected vision required; ability to distinguish wire colors and shades; sufficient hearing to communicate, respond to alarms, and perform job functions.
• Ability to work in noisy environments and at heights up to 60’ on ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, roofs, or other platforms.
• Capable of working in confined or restricted spaces as required.
• Must use construction site sanitary facilities and always wear required PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest, safety shoes, gloves, harness, etc.
• Ability to work scheduled hours with overtime and potential night shifts on short notice; this is a safety-sensitive position.

Special Requirements

• Ability to travel to job sites locally, regionally, in-state, and out-of-state as business requires; evening and weekend work may be required.
• On out-of-town projects, ability to stay at jobsite for up to 3–4 weeks at a time.
• Employment may be contingent upon successful completion of background checks, screenings, drug and alcohol testing, and physical examination(s), consistent with applicable laws.

Pay

$40 – $55 per hour (based on experience and qualifications).

Schedule

Dayshift, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
